The technology industry moves fast, but one thing remains constant: people are at the center of every successful company.

One of the conversations that stood out to us during CT Tech Week was the discussion around retention, resilience, and creating environments where technology professionals can build long-term, meaningful careers.

As a company that works closely with technology talent and hiring leaders every day, it was encouraging to hear honest perspectives from leaders who are committed to building stronger teams, developing future leaders, and creating more opportunities across our industry.

Thank you to WITS - Women in Tech Stamford (and surrounding areas) (WITS), The Stamford Partnership, Connecticut Technology Council, and CT Tech Week for bringing together such a thoughtful group of professionals, leaders, women, and allies.

We're grateful to be part of a technology community that continues to invest not only in innovation, but also in the people driving it forward.

Consumer prices just hit 3.8% — their highest level since 2023 — and wages are no longer keeping up. For the first time in three years, American workers are losing ground in real terms. HR leaders are now the ones managing the fallout. 📉

The numbers tell a pressured story. Nominal wages grew 3.6% over the past year. Inflation outpaced them at 3.8% — meaning real worker pay fell 0.2% in actual purchasing power. Energy costs, driven by the ongoing Iran conflict and the shuttered Strait of Hormuz, are the primary driver, bleeding into airfares, food, and broader household budgets that were already stretched after absorbing nearly 30% in cumulative price increases since the pandemic.

For IT hiring and HR teams, this creates a very specific pressure point. Compensation budgets were already constrained heading into 2026 — only 16% of organizations projected salary budgets higher than last year. Now, with inflation accelerating, employees are feeling the squeeze between flat raises and rising costs. That gap doesn't stay quiet. It shows up in disengagement, attrition, and a renewed willingness to job-hop the moment market conditions loosen.

The organizations navigating this well aren't necessarily paying more across the board. They're being more precise — identifying which roles and which talent segments carry the highest flight risk, prioritizing total compensation transparency, and making sure their benefits and flexibility story is part of every offer conversation.

Inflation is an economic problem. Retaining your best IT talent in the middle of it is a strategy problem. At Benchmark IT, we help our clients solve both. 💼

Your salary offer might be competitive. But if your benefits package is eating into your employees' take-home pay, you're losing talent you don't even know you're losing. 💼

Healthcare costs are climbing — and HR teams are feeling it on both sides of the equation. Employees are experiencing real financial stress from rising premiums, higher deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs that are compressing their effective compensation. And HR leaders are caught between budget constraints and the need to remain competitive in a market where benefits increasingly matter as much as base pay.

For IT hiring specifically, this is showing up in offer negotiations and attrition patterns in concrete ways. Tech candidates — who often have multiple offers in play — are evaluating total compensation packages more carefully than ever. A $5,000 salary difference matters less when one offer comes with significantly lower healthcare costs or more employer-covered coverage.

The HR teams responding well to this pressure are doing three things: auditing their current plans for hidden cost drivers, introducing more personalized and flexible benefit structures that let employees optimize for their own situation, and communicating benefits value more explicitly during the offer stage — not just during onboarding.

Benefits strategy is becoming a competitive differentiator in IT talent acquisition. At Benchmark IT, we help our clients understand what the market is offering so they can stay ahead. 💼

Everyone has an opinion about what AI means for entry-level jobs. NACE went and found the actual data — and the picture is more nuanced than the headlines suggest. 📊

Here's what we actually know about AI's impact on the early career labor market right now:

AI adoption is happening — but it's not uniform. A 2026 Gallup report found that 38% of employees say their organization has integrated AI, while 41% said it had not — and another 21% were unsure. AI is far more prevalent in knowledge-based industries like finance and technology than in production, retail, or healthcare. And crucially, 66% of employees in remote-capable jobs report using AI tools, compared to just 32% in non-remote roles. If your early talent pipeline skews toward in-person or frontline roles, the AI disruption hitting those candidates looks very different.

The four questions NACE's research actually addresses — AI tool adoption, AI's current impact on early-career work, skills employers now expect, and what the next five years may hold — are exactly what every IT hiring manager should be sitting with before their next campus or early-career recruiting push.

At Benchmark IT, we help our clients hire for the market that exists — not the one from three years ago. 💼

Earlier this week, Mariah and Devon spent the afternoon at the J.M. Wright High School Job Fair meeting bright, motivated students and discussing careers in IT and technology.

Events like these are a great opportunity to introduce students to the wide range of career paths across tech—from cybersecurity and software development to infrastructure, AI, and emerging technologies.

Providing early exposure to the industry helps students better understand the skills, opportunities, and possibilities available to them in today’s evolving tech landscape.

It was great to see so much curiosity, enthusiasm, and interest in the future of technology from the next generation of talent.
