Workplace Violence

You cannot listen to the TV news without an everyday report of a shooting, stabbing, or even worse, a mass attack. There’s no question that violence is increasing in the U.S., and of course that means it is increasing in the workplace.

Workplace Violence Affects All Industries

According to Bryghtpath, a recognized leader in crisis management, business continuity, and crisis communications, it seems that it doesn’t matter what industry, workplace violence occurs across the board. Following are excerpts from their article, “20 Notable Workplace Violence Incidents from 2022.”

• Walmart, Chesapeake, VA—a Walmart manager opened fire on fellow employees.

• FedEx, Memphis, TN—a former FedEx employee is facing attempted murder charges after police say he shot his coworker.

Data Theft Is All Too Real!

In light of a recent document leak at a Massachusetts National Guard facility, it seems like a good time to talk about protecting businesses from data leaks and data fraud. These are running rampant through businesses. With sophisticated techniques and intelligent hackers, businesses are at risk without protective measures.

After all, if a National Guardsman stole and distributed classified National Defense information, it proves that data breaches can happen anywhere. On April 13, Jack Teixera, a National Guardsman was charged with removing or transmitting national defense information, a crime under the Espionage Act. The data included highly classified military documents about the Ukraine war and other national security issues.

Of course, steps should have been taken to prevent this breach. If you have sensitive data, you MUST implement certain protocols and monitor even trusted employees.

Happy Spring!

April is a month to celebrate Easter, Passover, and Patriots Day. April and the Spring season is also a good time to “clean house” with regard to your employee background screening policies.

All businesses need to do this, but at this time of year many businesses are facing hiring for the busy summer season. Some of these businesses are hotels, resorts, and restaurants, especially those in tourist vacation spots. Retail stores in these areas will be busy too, and prospecting for new employees.

In addition, summer camps, sports centers, and children’s daycare centers are anticipating the school vacation crowd. Outdoor businesses like landscaping companies are gearing up for a busy summer season, too.

Employees hired in these businesses will include full-time, part-time, and temporary staff.

It’s Halloween… And There’s Nothing Scarier than
Hiring a Bad Employee!

Halloween signals that time of year when many businesses start their November hiring of extra temporary staff to cover the holiday shopping rush—a rush to buy gifts at retail stores, a rush to plan parties at eating and drinking establishments, and a rush for hotels to cover an increase in guests traveling to see family or to vacation during school break.

But business owners shouldn’t be in such a rush to hire that they skip the all-important employee background check. Although temporary employees are only with you for a short time, bad ones can wreak havoc on your business in the form of theft, fraud, violence, and damage to your reputation. Often this damage is irreparable.

Holiday Employee Crime Is Real.

There’s plenty of data to prove that workplace crime goes up during the holidays and that risk is even greater if temporary (or any) employees are hired without a comprehensive employee background check. Someone who has a record of crime may be more prone to commit that crime again.

In an article posted by ALM Property Casualty 360 entitled “Here's how to keep yourself, your family and your business safe from thieves during the holidays,” the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners stated that “organizations lose an estimated five percent of their total revenues to fraud each year.” The Association recommends “criminal checks, complete reference checks, and even brief ethics checks for all employees, saying companies that don’t take proper precautions run the risk of hiring serial fraudsters in the rush to bring on new help. All employees should be trained to watch for fraud or suspicious activity from shoppers and other employees.”

Employee Background Checks for Maintenance Personnel Are NECESSARY to Protect Your Staff, Residents & Business

Today, we’re going to talk about the necessity of employee background checks for prospective maintenance staff at facilities like hotels, condo and apartment complexes, hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living centers.

After all, these maintenance staff and cleaners often have access and/or keys to rooms where residents are staying, either for the short or long term. If these prospective employees aren’t thoroughly checked out, your business could be at risk of thefts, sexual harassments, sexual assaults, violent attacks, and lawsuits.

School Is Starting! Time for Employee Background Checks Before Hiring New School Employees.

Now more than ever we must be careful who is teaching our children and working in their schools. Department of Education statistics estimate that 5 million students are currently being sexually harassed, manipulated, and abused in America’s public school system. That translates to over 10 percent of K-12 students.

A University Degree Is No Protection.

A college or university degree does not mean that a person is not capable of physically abusing or sexually molesting a child. Case in point, in an article written by Carrie Jung for WBUR.com (May 03, 2022), Ms. Jung reported that Larry Chen, a former Brookline middle school teacher, was arrested and charged in April 2022 with 18 counts each of statutory r**e of a child, and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. The community was left reeling and in shock because Chen was well liked by students and parents.

Everyone Should Be Checked.

Indeed, anyone who works in a school, from maintenance and cafeteria staff to teachers, assistants, and even principals, should have their background checked in order to keep our children safe.

To that, we can add those who work (or volunteer) at non-school, after-school, or Saturday programs like gymnastics or dance classes, as well as Boys and Girls Clubs, Boy and Girl Scouts, and childcare programs, all of which become much busier with the start of school.
