OFRF is currently working with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) on a cooperative agreement to help build institutional knowledge of NRCS staff and equip them to better support the unique needs of organic and transitioning-to-organic farmers across the country.

As part of this work, we are helping tell the stories of organic farmers and their experiences working with NRCS.

In this blog, learn how organic farmers can best navigate and use NRCS programs. We hear from April Joy Farm, an organic, diversified crop and livestock farm in Washington. We also hear directly from the NRCS agent about helping this farm reach their conservation goals, and how they approach working with organic producers.

Dan Perkins of Perkins' Good Earth Farm is tackling aphids from the inside out. 🍅

Perkins' Good Earth Farm is a certified organic, diversified vegetable farm in De Motte, Indiana, that utilizes no-till, permanent deep-compost beds. In his Farmer-Led Trial, Dan will be doing sap analysis on his high tunnel tomatoes to test the hypothesis that plants with well-balanced nutrition are inherently less attractive to aphids.

You can read more about his experiment in our latest Farmer-Led Trials Program Spotlight: https://ofrf.org/news/farmer-led-trials-program-spotlight-perkins-good-earth-farm/

Are you using conservation strategies on your farm? Chances are you’re eligible for funding from the NRCS Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP)!

Through the CSP program, farmers work one-on-one with an NRCS conservation planner to create and employ a conservation plan for their farm as part of a five-year contract. OFRF spoke with Catherine Nguyen of Mora Mora Farm in Oregon about her experience with her CSP contract for cover cropping.

Get a transparent look at what it’s really like to work with NRCS: the benefits, the obstacles, and the lessons: https://ofrf.org/news/csp-cover-cropping-mora-mora-farm/

💡 Farmers and ranchers are natural researchers, regularly using trial-and-error to address on-farm questions and challenges.

For research involving farmers and University scientists, successful collaborations between farmers and researchers can greatly enhance results. However, these collaborations take time to build.

Read our report on for lessons learned from organic farmers and researchers about how to form these effective collaborations!
