Expert hands. Compassionate hearts. Extraordinary care.

This National Veterinary Technician Week, NVTAA™ celebrates the veterinary technicians whose knowledge, dedication and compassion make a difference to patients, clients and colleagues every day.

For those of us working in veterinary recruitment, recognition also means championing workplaces where that expertise is respected, supported and given room to grow.

To every veterinary technician: thank you for everything you bring to veterinary care.

Tag a veterinary technician who deserves a thank-you this week.

A recruitment brief should help you understand both the role and how the practice intends to hire.

Clarify the work, distinguish essential requirements from preferences and agree the decision process. Record unanswered questions so you can resolve them before presenting the opportunity.

An accepted offer is a milestone. The time before the first day still needs care.

Confirm the arrangements, give the candidate a clear point of contact and agree when you’ll check in. If anything changes, explain it promptly.

For veterinary recruiters, a thoughtful handover helps the candidate and practice start with the same expectations.

What do you always include in your post-offer follow-up?

Choose one recruitment skill you’d like to strengthen this month.

Make it specific enough to practise in your everyday work. That could mean asking one clearer question during a briefing or agreeing a follow-up date before ending a conversation.

Which skill would you choose?

Veterinary is a small world. Someone exploring a new role may work alongside people you know, and they need to feel confident that their search will stay private.

Before sharing a résumé or making an introduction, confirm which practices the candidate is comfortable approaching. If a new opportunity comes up, check with them first.

A candidate should know where their information is going, and hear about the next step from you.

Confidentiality is part of earning their trust.
