Judge Oliver also found that the unions and their members are suffering irreparable harm. He cited evidence that since the termination, BOP has disciplined and fired employees without due process protections, forced employees to work overtime in dangerous conditions, blocked union representatives from traveling to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress, and barred them from speaking with the media.

The court ordered BOP to immediately reinstate the contract for the remainder of its term and rejected the government’s demand that the unions post an $8.75 million bond, requiring a nominal $1,000 bond instead.

Ruling restores workplace rights and protections for 30K BOP officers and staff represented by AFGE.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re proud to recognize Omar Algeciras — a federal employee, union leader, and retired U.S. Air Force member with 21 years of military service.

Omar serves as Vice President of AFGE Local 2391 and as a Wage and Hour Investigator with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division, where he investigates workplace violations and enforces federal protections involving wages, hours, leave, agricultural employment, and other labor standards.

Months of advocacy by AFGE and other veterans allies paid off last week when lawmakers achieved enough signatures to compel a vote in the U.S. House on legislation to ensure veterans receive all of the compensation they are owed for their military service.
