The Master Gardener Program provides intensive training in horticulture to interested gardeners who then volunteer their time assisting with educational programs and activities for Ohio residents through their local Ohio State University Extension county office. Working with county Extension personnel, Master Gardeners provide such educational services to their communities as: answering gardening

questions from the public; conducting plant clinics; gardening activities with children, senior citizens, or disabled persons; beautifying the community; developing community or demonstration gardens; and other horticultural activities.

TODAY’S TIDBIT – Sassafras Tree

Sassafras is a captivating tree known for its brilliant display of autumn foliage and aromatic smell when the leaves are crushed. The most distinctive characteristic can be found in its leaves, which grow in three shapes: spoon (oval), fork (tri-lobed) and mitten-shaped.

Wildlife also love this tree. Sassafras is a larval host for several swallowtail butterfly species and the female tree can produce berries that feed birds. Many parts of the sassafras were historically used in medicinal ways.

The sassafras tree is native to Ohio and the eastern half of the United States. It's a common sight in Ohio, especially in the eastern part of the state, where it can be found in old fields, fence rows, and woodlands.
