The trucking industry could be preparing to lose more than 200,000 drivers.

New federal restrictions on non-domiciled CDLs were already projected to disqualify roughly 200,000 current credential holders.

Now, as more states consider restricting or eliminating these licenses altogether, the actual number of drivers leaving the workforce could be even higher.

Regardless of where you stand on the regulation, the workforce impact is worth paying attention to.

An already competitive pool of qualified drivers could get smaller, putting even more pressure on recruiting, retention and workforce planning for fleets across the country.

For logistics companies, this is another reminder that waiting until you desperately need drivers is becoming a riskier strategy.

What changes when you spend nearly 30 years working in logistics? Pretty much everything.

We asked our Director of Operations & Sales what has changed the most throughout her career, and two things immediately came to mind: regulations and competition.

Hiring used to be much simpler. Today, there are more steps that have to happen before a driver ever steps foot in a truck. Drug testing, employment verifications, driving records, insurance requirements, experience requirements and compliance all play a much bigger role.

And while those regulations are important for keeping people safe, they’ve also made operating a logistics business more complicated and expensive.

At the same time, competition has become much more cutthroat.

Large companies have the resources to absorb costs, train less experienced drivers and acquire competitors. Smaller operations don’t always have that luxury. As she put it, “If they can’t beat you, they buy you.”

After nearly three decades in the industry, her biggest observation is that running a logistics operation today requires companies to navigate far more than simply moving freight.

The industry has changed. The expectations have changed. And the companies that have survived have had to change with it.
