DFWTRN Ask…“Have you had a good or bad experience referring friends and family to your company?” (Best story wins a DFWTRN membership!)

Pros
1. Trust and Familiarity:
You already know the person's character and work ethic, making it easier to vouch for them.
2. Easier Onboarding:
Familiarity with their personality can help you support them during the onboarding process, leading to smoother integration.
3. Strengthened Relationships:
Working together can deepen bonds, especially if you both enjoy the job and workplace environment.
4. Company Trust in Your Judgment:
Successfully referring quality candidates can enhance your reputation at work.
5. Referral Bonuses:
Many companies offer financial incentives or perks for successful referrals.
6. Cultural Fit:
You’re likely to recommend someone who aligns well with the company’s values and culture.

Cons
1. Potential Strain on Relationships:
If the person struggles or has issues at work, it can lead to personal tension or awkwardness.
2. Your Reputation at Risk:
If the referral doesn’t perform well, it could reflect poorly on you.
3. Workplace Dynamics:
Personal relationships at work can blur boundaries, leading to perceptions of favoritism or conflicts.
4. Conflict of Interest:
Mixing professional and personal relationships can complicate decision-making, especially if you’re in a supervisory role.
5. Exit Awkwardness:
If the referred person decides to leave the company or is terminated, it might lead to uncomfortable conversations.
6. Dependence on You:
The person may expect you to mentor or advocate for them excessively, which can strain your own workload or professional standing.
7. Company Policies:
Some companies discourage or limit referrals involving close friends or family to avoid potential conflicts.

FIVE COMMON MISTAKES HIRING MANAGERS MAKE DURING INTERVIEWS
1. Failing to Prepare for the Interview: Skimming the candidate’s resume minutes before the interview leads to generic questions and a lack of focus. This misses the opportunity to delve into the candidate's unique skills and experiences.
2. Overemphasizing First Impressions: Judging candidates based on initial impressions or biases (e.g., appearance, handshake quality) can overshadow a thorough evaluation of their qualifications.
3. Talking Too Much: Hiring managers sometimes dominate the conversation, leaving little room for candidates to showcase their skills or provide meaningful responses.
4. Asking Illegal or Irrelevant Questions: Bringing up topics like age, family plans, or unrelated personal matters can create legal risks and waste valuable time.
5. Relying Solely on “Gut Instinct”: While intuition can play a role, overreliance on it can lead to subjective decisions. Structured, competency-based evaluations are more effective for selecting the right candidate.

FIVE STRATEGIES TO AVOID COMMON INTERVIEW MISTAKES
1. Review the candidate’s resume, portfolio, or LinkedIn profile in advance. Prepare a list of role-specific, behavioral, and situational questions.
2. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to frame questions and assess responses systematically.
3. Follow the 80/20 Rule: Candidates should speak 80% of the time. After asking a question, pause to allow the candidate time to think and respond.
4. Ask open-ended questions to encourage detailed answers (e.g., "Can you tell me about a time you solved a challenging problem?").
5. Create a scoring rubric with key competencies for the role and rate candidates objectively.
