Su***de prevention begins with recognizing both the challenges people may face and the strengths that can help them navigate through hard times.

A new Toolkit for Crisis Centers Serving American Indian and Alaska Native Communities was recently developed with input from frontline specialists, Tribal liaisons, and community leaders to help build effective and sustainable programs. It includes three modules covering foundation knowledge, partnership with Tribes, and culturally responsive approaches for crisis center counselors.

May you find the people who feel like home. 🤎

There is something sacred about the way we care for one another.

In our communities, family has never felt limited to blood. We gather people along the way. Native women you met who became aunties. Sisters we weren’t born beside. People who somehow just became like cousins. People we claim, and who claim us back.

It’s being welcomed into someone’s home and knowing you’ll be fed. It’s someone checking that you made it home safe. It’s the auntie who worries about you, the friend who became a sister who celebrates you, the ones who tease you, tell you when you’re wrong, sit with you when life is heavy, and make room for you exactly as you are.

And there is something so tender about another Indigenous woman looking at you and calling you “my girl.” Sometimes two little words can carry so much love.

Our relationships with one another are precious. We take care of each other. We remind each other who we are. And sometimes, the people we meet along the way become some of the deepest family we will ever know.

So may you find those people in this life.

The ones you claim, and who claim you right back. 🤎

Today is National Sober Day, and this one means something to me.

Recovery isn’t about having it all figured out. It’s about getting up, showing up, and choosing another day—even when that day is hard.

To everyone celebrating years, months, weeks, days, or simply making the decision to try again today: keep coming back.

One day at a time. One choice at a time. There is always hope.

A sobering new analysis released for National Su***de Prevention Month ranks South Dakota fifth in the nation for su***de rates, linking the numbers directly to high gun ownership and access to lethal means.
