Asynchronous Video Interviewing

Traditional phone screenings are rapidly being replaced by asynchronous video interviews, where candidates record responses to questions on their own time.

What's fascinating is how this is changing interview preparation strategies.

I recently coached someone through this process, and we found that successful candidates treat these less like formal interviews and more like thoughtful, authentic content creation.

The rigid, rehearsed answers that worked in live interviews actually underperform in this format compared to more conversational, genuine responses

Dynamic Team Construction

Organizations are moving away from fixed departments toward fluid teams assembled for specific projects. This creates fascinating new interview processes focused on collaboration styles and adaptability.

A VP of Talent told me recently: "We don't hire for teams anymore; we hire for our talent ecosystem. We need to know how people adapt to changing team configurations."

This means candidates need to showcase their ability to integrate quickly and work across diverse groups.

If I was explaining a gap in my resume, I'd own it confidently with context rather than apologizing:

"In 2022, I took six months to care for a family member. During that time, I also completed the Google Data Analytics certification to keep my skills current."

When we stop acting like a gap is a weakness and start presenting it as part of our human journey, the entire conversation changes. Interviewers respect authenticity paired with continued growth.

If I was negotiating a job offer, I'd never give the first number. When asked about salary expectations, I'd say:

"I'm excited about this role and confident we can find a package that reflects the value I'll bring. Based on my research, similar positions in this market seem to range from X to Y. What range have you budgeted for this position?"

This approach has consistently led to higher initial offers in my experience.

Remember, the first person to name a specific number usually loses in negotiation.

If I was an introvert dreading networking events,

I'd reframe my approach entirely.

Instead of trying to meet everyone, I'd set a manageable goal of two meaningful conversations. I'd prepare thoughtful questions in advance, focus on being genuinely curious, and give myself permission to take breaks.

As a recovering awkward networker myself, this strategy transformed networking from exhausting to actually enjoyable.

Quality connections always outperform quantity!
