Technical Publications Editor
Position Profile:
• Responsible for overall editing of manuals / media to ensure quality, style, content, and delivery.
• Performs initial edits and reviews all Operation / Maintenance and Training Manuals / Media using edit checklist for such items as:
a. Accuracy in spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation
b. Consistency in fonts, headings, and language
c. Technical accuracy
d. Adherence to military style
e. Artwork and text correlation
• Read and rewrite (if necessary) to ensure material is clear and concise
• Ensure that recommended edits are incorporated as intended
• Provide input regarding style conventions when direction is not provided in military style guide
• Update style sheets as necessary
• Interact with technical writers and publishing specialists, in person when necessary, and in writing
• Use judgment to weigh the ultimate impact proposed revisions will have on the book and the end user; make decisions based on those judgments and the time allotted for editing the manuals
• Monitor status of editing projects and meet departmental deadlines
• Communicate status to supervisor and other team members
Required Background and Skills:
• Minimum 5 years experience and/or Bachelor’s Degree in related field
• Proven expertise in proofreading, copyediting, and desktop publishing
• Strong command of basic grammar, punctuation, and spelling
• Proven ability to perform initial edits and reviews for adherence to military style, artwork and text correlation, and consistency in fonts, headings, and language
• Attention to detail and consistency a must
• Ability to multi-task and adjust to changing situations with no interruption in work
• Ability to adapt to changes in program schedules and manual priorities, and apply different processes for different technical customers
• Ability to interpret and apply detailed guidelines as outlined in various Department of Defense specifications and regulations, and adapt those regulations from one service requirement to another
• Strong computer skills, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
• Strong oral and written communications skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization
• Excellent interpersonal skills; must be able to work independently and interact effectively with all levels of organizations, internal and external
• U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person status.
