Happy National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

Let's hear it for our Director of Operations & Training, Adair Jensen-Smith, who won The Karen Tefelski Collaborations Champion Award at the annual Collaborations Conference!!

The Collaborations Conference brings together disability service providers, rehabilitation professionals, educators, and advocates from vaACCSES, va-APSE, and VRA to boost awareness, strengthen best practices, and improve upon employment and community-based services for people with disabilities. The Choice Group has been a proud member and volunteer with these organizations throughout the Collaborations Conference's 28-year history.

The Karen Tefelski Champion of Collaborations Award recognizes individuals whose exceptional dedication and support help make the conference possible. Named in honor of Karen Tefelski, who served as Executive Director and lobbyist for vaACCSES for more than 25 years, the award celebrates those who carry forward her legacy of service and collaboration.

Adair's contributions over the years as a board member and committee member have made an indelible impact on the Collaborations Conference, and on the disability services community. This recognition comes with especial meaning, as she concludes her final year on the conference's Steering Committee.

Thank you, Adair, for your leadership, collaboration, and commitment to the disability community. The Choice Group is proud to celebrate this well-deserved honor, and we are all so grateful for what you do to advance opportunities for people with disabilities.

Happy National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

Help us celebrate with Beth Martin, who has now been with The Choice Group for 13 years! Beth brings warmth, professionalism, and integrity to everything she does, and we're honored to have her on our team.

On her work at The Choice Group, Beth shared, "As Work Incentives Specialists, my team and I get to help remove some of the barriers our clients have to working or earning more money, by providing needed information, support and advocacy. I love the opportunity to be an advocate for people who are working and trying to navigate the challenging systems of Social Security and Medicaid. Plus, I'm so glad to be a part of a company with a supportive leadership and culture!"

Speaking of our CEO, Chris Lavach had plenty to say about Beth's time at The Choice Group:

"I want to take a moment and celebrate Beth Martin. Beth came to us 13 years ago. Her reputation well preceded her as a thoughtful, caring, and highly effective case manager. At the time, The Choice Group needed a dedicated Medicaid Waiver manager. So… I placed a carefully thought-out call to Beth asking if she knew anyone who may be interested in such a job, all the while crossing my fingers in the hopes that she would say “well, *I* would be interested”. And she did!

As they say, the rest is history – and it really is. Beth brought the structure and continuity to our Medicaid Waiver services to allow the program to grow. TCG is now the largest provider of Supported Employment under Virginia’s Medicaid Waiver and Beth supported that with compassion and the person-centered philosophy that matched TCG culture. In many ways Beth Martin epitomizes our culture here at The Choice Group. She is kind hearted, hard working, and dedicated... and she is an amazing advocate!

You all know Beth now as our WISA manager, where Beth has once again developed a program that, despite all of the regulatory, legal, and administrative pitfalls, is a person-centered success!"

Happy National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

This week, we're celebrating by highlighting some work-anniversaries!

Jeanne Hicks-Jordan has been with us for FIVE YEARS now as a Vocational Counselor helping our Ticket to Work clients achieve their work goals!

On her time working at The Choice Group, Jeanne shared, "I have enjoyed helping our clients navigate the Ticket to Work program over the past five years—from supporting individuals as they overcome challenges in the workplace to celebrating with clients as they achieve their career goals."

The Choice Group Ticket to Work Program Manager, Jennifer Anonick, also commented on Jeanne's time with us. "Jeanne is a valuable asset to our Ticket to Work program. From updating resumes, helping clients find jobs and jumping in to assist with benefit related issues, Jeanne is always working to provide the best outcomes for our Ticket clients."

Meet Ashley!

Ashley has been working at The Federal Reserve since 2019 and currently works on the Payroll Team. She spends her time processing mail and is always eager to help her co-workers. From organizing supply closets to decorating for the holidays and birthdays, she enjoys every minute working.

According to Ashley, "Working at The Federal Reserve is my dream job."

Way to go, Ashley! Yes, Queen! We are honored to have supported you on your employment journey, and we are so thrilled you are in a positive workplace and living the dream!

Meet Austin!
Austin has worked in the Athletics Department at the College of William and Mary for 13 years! Over the summer months, Austin also works at a local campground. He has recently achieved a long-term goal of obtaining his driver's license after studying with Cindy Brown, The Choice Group Vocational Counselor, and his CSS Counselor.

And look at this gorgeous truck Austin purchased to get to and from work!

Happy National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

Meet Angel!
Since starting work as a dishwasher at Buffalo Wild Wings just a few months ago, Angel has continued to impress with his incredible work ethic, positive attitude, and drive to do his very best. Angel credits his late mother for instilling these values in him from a young age. He says he works hard each day to make her proud and it’s clear that he carries those lessons with him into the workplace.

We have been blown away by Angel’s willingness to go above and beyond what is expected of him. His supervisor, Donovan, shared that after working in Michelin-starred restaurants, he has seen some of the highest standards in the industry and says Angel is right up there with them. “Angel goes above and beyond his job description, gets along well with the team, and is appreciated for all he does.” Donovan also described Angel as a model employee and someone he would consider a “standard” for new team members to look up to.

Rebekah Ober, Angel's Vocational Counselor from The Choice Group, also shared, "Angel has been an absolute rockstar at his dishwashing job. He told me from day one that he gets his drive, passion and work ethic from his late mother, who he strives to make proud each day. Angel gives everything he does 100% effort and it shows."

We couldn’t be prouder of Angel and the dedication he brings to work every day. Keep shining, Angel!

Meet Nicholas!
Nick is a welcoming Customer Service Representative at Walgreens, where he's worked since January of 2025. His Vocational Counselor here at the Choice Group is Regional Manager Heather Mossinger. She said, "Nick is a valued part of his team, greets everyone with a smile, and loves his job!" We love to hear it!

Bethany, his Walgreen's Store Manager, shared about Nicholas, "Success isn't just about the work you do; it's about the heart and effort you put into it. Nick brings absolute determination, kindness and joy to his day, showing everyone what it means to work hard for your dreams! Congratulations on your achievements!"

And we couldn't agree more!

Happy National Disability Employment Awareness Month! NDEAM is recognized every October, when we celebrate the contributions of working people with disabilities. We share awareness, promote inclusive workplaces, and honor the hard work of those with disabilities. We're kicking off our celebration with a week of success...

Meet Raevyn!
Raevyn participated in Project SEARCH, and Rita Dee was her instructor. For a position with Sentara, Raevyn was trained by Rachel McGregor, who is now a WISA with The Choice Group!

Raevyn is entering her sixth year with Sentara as an Environmental Services Tech, ensuring equipment is clean, covered, and always ready for the next baby that needs it. She is responsible for disassembling, sanitizing, and reassembling the cribs and isolettes in the NICU.

Rita shared, "Raevyn is such a great example of someone capitalizing on their strengths, like her attention to detail!"

We're so proud of you, Raevyn. Thanks for all your hard work!

We're celebrating two years, and she's just getting started! Sherry Davis is a rockstar Vocational Counselor, and brings an indelible positive force to her team!

Sherry commented on her time with us at The Choice Group. "I am honored to work at The Choice Group. I wake up every morning knowing that I have the opportunity to make the difference in someone's life. It is fulfilling to help individuals find success and reach their goals. I'm the lucky one!"

Lead Vocational Counselors on her team, Billy Kraus and Rita Dee, had wonderful things to say about her.

Rita exclaimed, "In Sherry's time with The Choice Group she has applied her experience and background to providing quality services to her clients. Sherry supports her region in a variety of ways and is a valued member of the team."

Billy continued, "Sherry is such an amazing part of our team and is a role model for treating others with kindness and care."
