Preparing a Gravel Driveway for Fall
Gravel driveways are durable and cost-effective, but they require routine maintenance to handle harsh winter conditions.

Inspect for Ruts and Low Spots
Walk or drive slowly down your driveway and look for areas where water tends to collect. Ruts and depressions often develop over the summer from vehicle traffic and heavy rain. These low spots can hold water, which may freeze and create even deeper damage during the winter.

Regrade the Surface
Fall is one of the best times to regrade a gravel driveway. Restoring the proper crown helps direct water toward the edges instead of allowing it to pool in the center. Proper drainage is critical for preventing erosion and minimizing freeze-thaw damage.

Add Fresh Gravel Where Needed
If you notice exposed dirt or thin areas in your driveway, consider adding additional gravel before winter arrives. Fresh material helps create a stable driving surface and reduces the likelihood of mud and ruts during snowmelt periods.
