One of the major areas of emphasis within HR Management is community involvement. This is an area that is often overlooked, as many organizations fail to view the collective functionality of internal business partners as a type of community.
HR leaders are tasked with interacting within this "community" each day, and sometimes the scope of interaction requires one to go above and beyond the natural definition of required tasks in order to obtain the best results possible. As such, many leaders become unsung heroes, never wanting or receiving recognition for their efforts, yet they are satisfied nonetheless because their involvement yields a successful outcome, in one way or another. We consider these acts to be selfless.
The HR field is not the only environment in which this occurs. These selfless acts are committed within communities in every industry imaginable, by heroes that remain unknown and determined to "do good" in their communities. An example of this invaluable deed occurred recently during the general elections held in Georgia. As the Housing Sustainability Coordinator with View Point Health, Gena Greene, MHR works to steer the dynamics of homelessness in the metropolitan Atlanta and surrounding areas. Providing intensive care coordination and individual skills training for the adult homeless population, she works to keep individuals stably housed while maximizing independent living skills. During the general election, Gena became a hero among her "community" by ensuring that everyone assigned to her overflowing caseload was registered to vote. Additionally, she also transported many of them to the polls on election day to make sure that they received the opportunity to make their vote count, which included a 67 year-old client who had never voted in his lifetime!
Although she knew that it wasn't a requirement of her job, she understood that her internal business partners, her "community", and the relevance of her actions would yield success due to her involvement. These are the bricks that support the foundations of successful organizations. These are the types of leaders that we seek out to expand our knowledge base, manage difficult situations, and retain. This is who we envision to undeniably define successful involvement among our business communities.
