Awkward silence in an interview isn't a problem. Filling it usually is.

Job seekers, when you finish your answer, stop. The interviewer is taking notes or thinking about what's next. You didn't do anything wrong. Keep talking and you start walking back a good answer.

Hiring managers, ask the question and then wait. The first answer is usually the rehearsed one. The real one tends to show up after the pause, and you only hear it if you give it room.

Some of the best conversations I've had with candidates and clients happened right after a few seconds of nothing.
