As we approach America's 250th birthday, what we know fondly as the “Stars and Stripes” was adopted by the Continental Congress as the official American flag on June 14, 1777, in the midst of the Revolutionary War.

The Declaration of Independence made the adoption of an American flag necessary. Previously, each colony or special interest had its own flag.

On Flag Day, let’s celebrate the enduring symbol of freedom, unity, and pride that is the Stars and Stripes! 🗽

Our 10-year anniversary of walking in the ALS Northwest fundraising event in Portland was nothing less than magical! 🪄

We have surpassed our total giving goal of $100k since 2016. This year, alone, we raised $14,717.25, bringing our lifetime total to $104,903.25. 🎉Thank you to ALL who walked, gave, shouted out on socials, and cheered us on!

Below is the speech delivered just before the great privilege of cutting the starting line ribbon. We are honored to be recognized, but more so, we are most proud to share John Niemer's legacy.

"Cutting the ribbon today to kick off our walk is Sara Powell of Team VanderHouwen.

This morning, we are honored to welcome Team VanderHouwen as our ribbon cutters for the Portland Walk ALS.

For the past ten years, this team has shown up with unwavering dedication to support people living with ALS and to honor the memory of their beloved colleague and friend, John Niemer. John’s loyalty, compassion, humor, and strength left a lasting impact on everyone around him, and his legacy continues to inspire the entire VanderHouwen family.

Led by team captain Sara Powell, Team VanderHouwen has become a powerful example of what community, compassion, and commitment can accomplish together. Through creative fundraising efforts, community partnerships, and their steadfast support of ALS Northwest, they have raised more than $100,000 over the last decade. Their dedication helps ensure that people living with ALS and their families receive critical care, support, and resources throughout our community.

Please join me in thanking and celebrating Team VanderHouwen for their incredible impact and for helping us officially kick off today’s Portland Walk ALS."
