WASHINGTON — US Dept. of Agriculture Economic Research Service (ERS) released its Livestock, Dairy and Outlook for November. The agency showed that pork production was expanding, and a strong domestic and international demand has kept pork inventories current.

According to the outlook, fourth-quarter pork production will hit a record high at more than 7 billion lbs. or 3.5 percent greater than 2017. Smaller production increases are likely to extend through the first quarter of 2019, for which the pork production forecast was also lowered by 45 million lbs. to 6.85 billion lbs. However, that was still more than 3 percent ahead of production a year earlier.

On the beef production side forecasts for 2018 were lowered by 30 million lbs. to 26.9 billion lbs. The ERS said the revision was made on the numbers as the closeout of the third quarter, along with the fourth-quarter expectations of slightly fewer steers, heifers and bulls to be slaughtered. The 2019 beef production forecast was also lowered by 100 million lbs. to 27.9 billion lbs. for similar reasons.

Decreased broiler production resulted in a revised projection on declining placements of broiler chicks in recent weeks, while prices were increased slightly based on a recent price uptick. Broiler stocks were also increased in response to a large bump in third-quarter ending stocks. No revisions were made to egg production, trade, or price projections.

Turkey production for 2018 was lowered by 24 million lbs. to 5.875 billion lbs., 2 percent below 2017. Turkey production for 2019 was reduced to 80 million lbs. to 5.908 billion lbs., a half- percent increase over the 2018 forecast.

U.S. CDC urges consumers not eat any romaine lettuce due to E. coli outbreak
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising consumers, restaurants, and retailers not to eat, serve, or sell any romaine lettuce as it investigates an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections linked to romaine.

Thirty-two people infected with the outbreak strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 have been reported from 11 states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from October 8, 2018 to October 31, 2018. Thirteen people were hospitalized, including one person who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. No deaths have been reported.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has identified 18 ill people infected with the same DNA fingerprint of E. coli O157:H7 bacteria in two Canadian provinces: Ontario and Quebec. Epidemiologic evidence from the United States and Canada indicates that romaine lettuce is a likely source of the outbreak.

Ill people in this outbreak were infected with E. coli bacteria with the same DNA fingerprint as the E. coli strain isolated from ill people in a 2017 outbreak linked to leafy greens in the U.S. and to romaine lettuce in Canada. The current outbreak is not related to a recent multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections linked to romaine lettuce.

CDC is advising that consumers do not eat any romaine lettuce because no common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand of romaine lettuce has been identified.

Disregard for Allergens Leads to Manslaughter Conviction

Careless disregard for food allergens led to a 15-year-old girl's death in England and manslaughter convictions for two employees of an Indian restaurant. The employees were sentenced to jail earlier this month.
Nut allergy sufferer Megan Lee died in early 2017 from an asthma attack after she ate food from the Royal Spice takeaway in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, according to Birmingham Live.
The teenager and her friend ordered takeout online and indicated allergies to prawns and nuts in the order. However, the delivered meal was later found to have the "widespread presence" of peanut protein, according to Birmingham Live.

The girl was hospitalized and within two days died from asthma due to nut allergy.
Last month a jury found restaurant owner Mohammed Abdul Kuddus and manager Harun Rashid guilty of killing Lee by reason of gross negligence. Kuddus admitted guilt and was sentenced on Nov. 7 to two years in prison. Rashid also was found guilty of food safety violations, and he was given three years.
"Although it shouldn’t take a death for food facilities to take another, more in-depth, look at its allergen programs, the teen’s family hopes that this will serve as a warning to other food businesses who urged all food businesses to improve the standard of food safety and to take allergies seriously," wrote David Acheson, CEO of the Acheson Group (www.achesongroup.com), a former FDA associate commissioner for food and a frequent contributor to Food Processing. "I, too, urge all food facilities and providers to take it as a warning, as a jolt to examine your allergen control programs."

The Acheson Group (TAG) is a global food and beverage consulting company dedicated to helping clients protect their brand. Providing guidance and expertise worldwide, TAG helps companies throughout the food supply chain more effectively mitigate risk, improve operational efficiencies, and ensure com...
