If you feel nervous when meeting with a hiring manager, you might use fillers, disclaimers, or hedge words.

Just. Kind of. Sort of. Tracy Hooper says we reach for those words to sound humble, but we end up sounding like we lack confidence.

Her fix starts with listening to yourself. Ask a friend if you can record a conversation, then listen for the words you didn't know you were saying. Pick the one you hear most and give yourself 30 days to replace it.

"Correct me if I'm wrong" becomes "Let me know if I heard this correctly." "I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to you" becomes "Thank you for your patience."

Tracy Hooper is a former TV news anchor and the founder of The Confidence Project. Check out her full conversation with Mac on this week's episode of "Find Your Dream Job." 🎧 https://ow.ly/Le7p50ZIum4

You blocked out the afternoon to apply for jobs, but instead you cleaned the garage.

If you know that feeling, ICF-certified career coach Ben Tobin wants you to hear that it is not a character flaw. Executive dysfunction is a disruption in your brain's ability to plan, organize, and follow through.

Ben joins Mac on this week's episode of "Find Your Dream Job" with three moves that can help:

- Lower the stakes. A first interview you bomb teaches you more than one you agonize over.
- Sit with the discomfort. The dread runs its course when you let yourself feel it.
- Build structure. Pick the hour, name your first step, and write a fresh to-do list each day.

Why does your inner critic take the driver's seat during a job search?

On this episode of "Find Your Dream Job," guest expert Tanya Romaniuk of Portland State University says perfectionists often let a harsh inner voice control their next move, feeding fear and self-doubt right when they need confidence most.

She recommends flipping the script: name that inner critic, then put a more compassionate voice in the front seat instead. Think about how a loved one or trusted mentor would talk to you, and let that voice guide you through your job search.
