How to hit the mark with your credentials... every time.

Here's a little secret. Employers don't actually care about most of the stuff on your resume. What they're primarily interested in is how your experience translates into the key performances that you will be judged by while on the job.  The interview is an opportunity to substantiate the cl

When I represent executives who have recently been laid off, every single one of them tell me they will do whatever is necessary to never have this happen again. They begin to brainstorm ways that they can become a more productive and effective leader. They are driven to set goals in order to meet their newly heightened expectations. Then when they finally land a new job.... they become complacent and throw all their newfound motivation out the window. In this video, I list some effective tips that execs can add to their “Executive Bucket List” in order to keep yourself relevant in corporate America. I would love to hear of tips that you believe would be beneficial to an “Executive Bucket List.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gO-WruMOj5Q

Everyone of my executive clients always asks how long his/her job search will take. It is almost impossible to give a definitive answer because there are so many variables. In my latest video, I discuss these variables in depth in order to give insight into what you should expect from a time standpoint in driving your search. If you would prefer to view the written article, you can find that on my blog at www.DonStraits.com. I would enjoy any feedback you may have on this topic.

You've lost your job, but you have received a great severance package, so there is no reason to worry. You are a talented executive so you will be hired quickly. But you need a break. You have put in many years of hard work. You would like to do some of things you have only dreamed about. Dedicated family time, adventures around the globe, and just some time to relax. So you are going to put off looking for a job for several months. What you may not realize is just how difficult your search will be. I don't begrudge you that time off, but at lease put in place a few tactics that can help make that time work for you, and give you a head start on your search. Here are a couple of great ideas.

For decades, many senior executives easily drove their career through advancement and opportunities that were presented to them. Or their network was always able to provide connections. More than ever before executives are finding themselves struggling to secure their next assignment. The “Ole Boy's Network” just isn't what it used to be. Almost a day doesn't go bye that an executive doesn't say to me, “I've never had to look for a job before.” Many executives don't know where to begin and end up making classic mistakes. Here are some guidelines to help executives drive their search.

"Social media is a waste of time." "I've never gotten a single call from any of my social media efforts." "Social media is nothing but a black hole. Overrated!!!" Those comments are typical for senior execs driving a job search. Almost without exception every senior executive does not know how to use social media, or how to use it effectively, to drive his/her search. But if you ask them, they think they know how to use it. And then they dismiss it as an ineffective strategy for their job search. Let's look at the issue and I'll provide some rock solid social media strategies that can make an immediate difference in your search. These strategies only scratch the surface of social media, but they are a good start. What is your experience? How has social media worked....or not worked...for you? BTW, in a recent comment on one of my videos, the poster suggested I do a Q & A format for a video. That's a great idea. So if you have any questions on any job search topic, please let me know and I will address them in a video. Thanks everyone. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah.

How many times have you heard the phrase: "We can't hire you. You're Overqualified." Let's find out what is really behind that statement and what you can do about it....short of coming up with a very special torture that might get you thrown in jail. Hopefully this video will motivate hiring managers to rethink their hiring practices and give some guidance to job seekers who are faced with that statement. The video will begin with some wisdom from the classic cartoon character: The Wizard of Id.

Don Straits explains why businesses are afraid of hiring overqualified individuals and why that is a huge mistake.

People are innately creative. But corporations on a daily basis stifle that creativity. "We can't do that, it's corporate policy." Corporate policies are just one roadblock to the creativity process. A corporate culture that forces conformity does more to limit growth than anything else. Yep, maybe there are less internal conflicts when everyone is a Dilbert clone. But the opportunity for new products, new markets, new processes, new solutions to problems becomes nonexistent when we reward conformity rather than encourage debate, dialogue, and discussions devoid of condemnation and threats of retaliation. Here is a short video on the creativity process, along with a tip on how to leverage your creativity to drive your career. Also available is a free tutorial on creativity for a corporate workshop. Would love your opinion.

Why corporate executives fail and why millennials are taking over the world! Ok, that might be a stretch, but not much. Millennials are driving new business and career paradigms and senior executives "don't get it". Here is my 2-cents....or is that sense....on why traditional companies are stuck in the comfort zone. What is your opinion?

Senior executives all too often are trapped in the comfort zone while millennials lead the way in innovation. The net result is that old-line companies fail to seize opportunities and emerging companies are led by the innovators, visionaries, and risk-takers. When the time comes for senior executives (read mature) to seek out new employment opportunities they are often passed over for younger, more aggressive leaders that understand the new business and career paradigms. Would love your opinion on the issues in this video.
