🔥 𝘛𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺’𝘴 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘛𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸’𝘴 𝘚𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴

In June 2018, Tiran Jackson and his wife, Maleka, traveled to the Bahamas to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary.

During a boating excursion, the boat exploded.

Maleka was killed. Tiran suffered severe injuries and lost his left leg.

Yet out of unimaginable tragedy, Tiran chose resilience. He rebuilt his life and ultimately turned his experience into a mission of encouraging others.

Glen Gould used Tiran’s remarkable story in his devotional last week to illustrate a powerful truth:

“𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪’𝙧𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜.”

Using James 1:2-4, Glen encouraged us to consider how – and a positive, thoughtful perspective – can shape the way we respond to job-search and career challenges.

Hard seasons aren't necessarily wasted seasons. They can develop maturity, resilience, character, and readiness for what comes next.

𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘒𝘦𝘺 𝘛𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴

✓ 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽. The same situation can feel crushing or constructive depending on how you respond to it. Job search is difficult, but that difficulty can develop strengths you'll need in the future.

✓ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹. Tiran's story reminds us that adversity can produce extraordinary growth, leadership, and character. That doesn't minimize the pain. It demonstrates what can emerge from it.

Glen illustrated the power of perspective with the story of two shoe salesmen sent to the Australian outback.

The first reported: “𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. 𝗡𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗲𝘀!”

The second saw the same situation and exclaimed: “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆! 𝗡𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗲𝘀 – 𝘆𝗲𝘁!”

🟦 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. ✅ 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲.

Forget about generic questions like, “Why is this position open?” Instead, you’ll learn to ask questions that clearly demonstrate your value and the you bring – making it clear that any company would be lucky to have you on their team. 👍

𝐈𝐬 𝟔𝟓 𝐓𝐨𝐨 𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐉𝐨𝐛❓
🔥 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘚𝘦𝘦𝘬𝘦𝘳

When Don Millman and I met in December 2020, he was facing an extraordinarily difficult season – job loss, the death of his mother, and an ongoing health issue.

Rather than retire, Don decided to , stay active, and find work with a greater purpose.

For one promising opportunity, Don and I developed a PowerPoint to tell his story and practiced his presentation on Zoom.

During the actual interview, the VP of Manufacturing stopped him and said:

“𝗪𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵. 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗺 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿.”

Don was 𝟲𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱. 😲

When someone in their fifties tells me no one will hire them, Don is one of several 60-plus clients who immediately come to mind.

𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲

In his devotion last week, Don spoke with authority about walking wisely through seasons of waiting, especially during career transition. Using Colossians 4:5-6, he encouraged us to “redeem the time.”

𝘍𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘒𝘦𝘺 𝘛𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴

✓ 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆. Avoid activity that merely feels productive. Focus on actions that actually move your search forward.

✓ 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀. Many opportunities come through people. Networking and staying connected are far more effective than relying on anonymous applications.

✓ 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗯𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀. Employers notice attitude and character. Positive, respectful communication matters in interviews and networking.

✓ 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Keep working, networking, preparing, and pursuing opportunities while trusting God with the timing and outcome.

Don's message was simple: 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁.

God opened a remarkable door for Don at 65.

Many years ago, I made a major . I was a district manager in the heavy construction and civil engineering business, and I transitioned into my career management calling.

In my final year as district manager, we finished second out of 18 districts worldwide. My team and I also sold the largest project in company history – the Georgia Dome.

✨ 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴.

Last week, John Lhota took us on a journey through his career and explained how he landed five senior-level roles – at the director, vice president, and CIO level – 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴.

He didn’t apply because 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁.

John’s devotional centered on how we can uncover opportunities faster through networking, preparation, and trusting that God has a plan for their careers.

𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀

✓ 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. John said many jobs are never publicly posted, and several of his own roles came through people he knew, conversations, and referrals.

✓ 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝗯. He emphasized that reaching out to others with, “Can you coach me?” or “Can I get your advice?” opens doors more effectively than simply asking about job openings.

✓ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿. John encouraged us to use this season to strengthen our networks, prepare for interviews, and remember that God can use even difficult career transitions for good.

𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 #𝟭 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀.

🔥 And John didn’t just teach it. 𝗛𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁.

He built relationships and asked for advice. Through those relationships and conversations, five organizations ultimately created senior-level roles for him at Barnett Bank (now Bank of America), Delta Air Lines, the Fayette County Board of Education (CIO), CyberTrust (bought by Verizon), and Secureworks.

𝗙𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀. 𝗙𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻.

John’s message was clear: Be proactive. Build relationships. Ask for advice. Prepare thoroughly. And trust that God can use the right person, the right conversation, and the right opportunity at just the right time.

One, near Waco, wrote to me earlier today: “𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸!” Next up: a panel IV focused on behavioral questions.

The other, near Fort Worth, had a final IV with one company last Friday and another yesterday. We just met to evaluate the 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀 that came in.

One was the clear winner.

In both cases, we met beforehand to 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀.

𝗖𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲? 𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘀𝗼.

My all-time favorite story is about a gentleman who hired us to do a full-scale, three-hour role play with him. He landed his job as president of the U.S. division of a Dutch company.

✨ 𝘔𝘺 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥

Daryle L. Smith centered his devotional at last week on Psalm 121 and a powerful reminder for anyone going through career transition:

Your help comes from the Lord.
🔺 Not from the economy.
🔺 Not from a hiring manager.
🔺 Not from your own strength alone.

Daryle encouraged us to remember that unemployment is a season, remain faithful, and trust that God is working – even when we can't see what He's doing.

𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀

1️⃣ 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘂𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗽. Lift your eyes from discouragement and focus on God's promises rather than bills, rejection, or fear.

2️⃣ 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Employers, friends, and connections can help, but God is the ultimate provider and can open doors in His timing.

3️⃣ 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿. The same God who made heaven and earth can create opportunities, connect you with the right people, and move your job search forward.

Daryle encouraged us: “𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘎𝘰𝘥, 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘩.”

And he packed a lot more wisdom into just 10 minutes:

✓ A delayed opportunity is not always a denied opportunity.
✓ Never underestimate what God can do in a single day.
✓ Your job search does not define your worth.
✓ Your résumé may be in someone’s inbox, but your life is in God’s hands.

In 2022, I worked with a client in a remote corner of Michigan – unable to relocate, caring for his aging father, and feeling stuck with limited job prospects.

“𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮, 𝐆𝐨𝐝?”
✨ 𝘏𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘴 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘈𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨

Last week, Phillip Rogers became emotional as he shared his career journey. From corporate leadership to teaching and back through career transition, one theme kept emerging:

✝️ God was present through every setback, every redirection, and every new opportunity.

Looking back, Phil could see God's fingerprints in places he hadn't recognized at the time.

His message was simple but powerful: Difficult seasons produce , , and – and God frequently works through people, networking, and unexpected opportunities.

𝙏𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙆𝙚𝙮 𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨

✓ 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗼𝗸𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘀𝗸, "𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂, 𝗚𝗼𝗱?" Phil admitted that during layoffs and career transitions, he questioned God's plan. Looking back, he now sees how God was faithfully guiding each step.

✓ 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀. Friends, mentors, and fellow JobSeekers provided encouragement, wisdom, and direction when he needed them most.

✓ 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿. Closing with Romans 5:1–5, Phil reminded us that 𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦.

His devotional encouraged us to trust God's timing, persevere through adversity, and look for the hope and purpose He is building – even when we can't yet see the destination.
