🤦‍♂️ 𝘖𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨.

We started 𝟭𝟯 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 last week because my computer was updating.

Our workshop was on video interviewing – and I teach job seekers to boot their computers 30 minutes before a video interview.

I had used my laptop at home that morning AND turned it back on when we entered the room.

⏱️ Nevertheless, it took its own sweet time.

𝘚𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩. 😄

We had a senior-level audience, and the workshop quickly moved beyond the basics to…

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲.

All’s well that ends well. I’ve already heard that some who attended are doing better in their video interviews this week.

Monday, I was having lunch with two HR leaders who are on the hunt. One had interviewed for a CHRO position last week and said something that caught my attention:

“𝗜’𝗺 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗜’𝗺 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.”

𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐰?
✨ 𝘈𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘎𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘴

Thirteen years ago, Rick and Alicia H Knox were both unemployed.

I remember Alicia’s joy. Only later did I learn that unemployment wasn’t their only struggle.

Last Thursday at , Alicia shared more of their story – and knowing what they were facing made that joy even more remarkable.

Her message: 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱.

When you’re searching for a job, facing family challenges, or wondering what comes next, being thankful may feel like a tall order.

Alicia encouraged us to practice it anyway:

✓ 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲. When discouragement sets in, pause and recognize what you still have: people who care, gifts you can use, and reasons to keep going.

✓ 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲. Say “thank you” often. Notice the everyday blessings that are easy to overlook.

✓ 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻. In the waiting, through the storm, and when the good news comes, keep turning your heart toward God.

“𝘌𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘴𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘦: 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘮, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦.” – Psalm 100:4

Alicia and Rick’s story also gave us reasons to .

Rick landed a great job soon after joining and has continued to thrive, earning promotions and raises. Alicia flourished too – she now serves as Senior Mortgage Loan Officer at .

But the part that stays with me is this: 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆.

If you’re in a hard season, I hope her story encourages you. You can bring your worries to God and give thanks for the blessings you can see today.

Have you been without success?

Sometimes a job seeker comes to me after months of searching. Their résumé and LinkedIn page need work, but the moment they appear on , I see another problem: weak lighting, poor framing, or audio that makes them hard to hear.

I can’t know whether these deficiencies cost them jobs. I do know it made their qualifications harder to see – and gave them an impression to overcome before earning the next interview or job offer.

A few years ago, I met with a CEO to provide career advice. Before our meeting, I looked her up on LinkedIn. Her organization had 13,000 employees, so I assumed she ran a division.

𝘛𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵, 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 😮

The moment she appeared on Zoom, 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. Even from her home office, her framing, lighting, background, and delivery commanded the screen.

Your video setup is part of your . It can reinforce your credibility – or distract from the experience and accomplishments you worked so hard to bring to the interview.

😮 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴 𝘢 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘵.

Last Thursday at , while I was teaching how to build a compelling brand, establish credibility, and get employers to call, one of my clients was watching that lesson play out.

Here’s the twist: while I was 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, he was 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 for a job for which he is eminently qualified.

About a week after we overhauled his LinkedIn page, an HR director found him on LinkedIn.

✓ He had not applied for the position.
✓ He didn’t even know the position existed.
✓ The position had not yet been posted.

🔨 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵, 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘺.

Craig A. Heath was known as “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿” when he played college football.

A defensive back and kick returner, he returned two punts for touchdowns and served as co-captain of an undefeated team ranked among the top 10 NCAA Division II teams in the nation.

But Craig learned that even tough guys need to sometimes.

In case you missed it, our 𝟭𝟲 𝗪𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 workshop has repeatedly marked a in people’s .

We learned, discussed, and applied techniques for transforming ordinary career messages into persuasive ones employers remember and reward with :

✓ Many years ago, 𝗔𝗹𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗱 credited this topic with helping him end a job search that lasted three years and three days.

✓ Six years ago, Blair Walker developed a powerful tagline that helped him "land" the job he still holds today at ATL.

✓ In that same workshop (2/28/2020), pierre tanguay transformed “CSI” into the much larger “MASTER” leadership framework – and developed a library of Hero Stories to support it.

✓ About 18 months ago, 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 brought a long job search to an end soon after attending our “16 Ways” workshop. He landed a good job, but economic pressures later forced the company to eliminate most of its workforce. This time, however, Michael’s search lasted weeks instead of months – and he landed a great job.

✓ Six months ago, 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹 developed a persuasive message that helped him land a great job at Caterpillar.

𝐌𝐲 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬
𝘛𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 🏠𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘵, ✈️𝘋𝘦𝘭𝘵𝘢, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 🥤𝘊𝘰𝘬𝘦 – 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘵𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘢

At yesterday, Bruce Vorderlandwehr shared his journey through what he called the “Atlanta Trifecta” – seven interviews at The Home Depot, five at Delta Air Lines, and four at The Coca-Cola Company.

Despite the setbacks, God was at work. This season gave Bruce time to heal after his father’s passing, build an apartment for his mother, and deepen his faith.

𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘒𝘦𝘺 𝘗𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘴

✓ 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀. Bruce read from Isaiah 43 and reminded us that when we pass through deep waters, rivers of difficulty, or fire, God does not abandon us.

✓ 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗼 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿. His wilderness taught him to stop depending solely on his own strength, pray daily, spend time in the Word, and surround himself with supportive people.

✓ 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. Even after disappointing interviews and layoffs, Bruce saw God open another door at the right time – ultimately bringing him to a role close to home with strong future potential.

As Bruce put it:

“𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗜 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟵, 𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. 𝗠𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹.”

✅ His story reminds us that what looks like a setback may actually be preparing us for what comes next.

And perhaps the most encouraging words for anyone walking through a wilderness today come from Isaiah:

“𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶.”
– Isaiah 43:2

𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐞’𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞
🔥 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘗𝘢𝘪𝘯

Becky Neufeld shared an emotional testimony at yesterday. She was open and remarkably transparent about her difficult journey over the past year.

Her message was simple but powerful: “You are exactly where you’re supposed to be right now.” Even when the journey is painful – and, as Becky candidly put it, “the middle sucks” – there’s still purpose in the pain.

𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵𝘀

✓ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲. This painful period has a purpose.
✓ 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻. He is in control, even when circumstances are difficult.
✓ 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱. He uses our challenges to reveal His glory and love.
✓ 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲. That gives us hope for a positive outcome.

My favorite quote was:
“𝙂𝙤𝙙 𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙜𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙃𝙚’𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙜𝙚.”

Then we put the lesson into action through role-play vignettes – and all three volunteers absolutely crushed it!
