The state of AI hiring fraud, in 2026 numbers:

38.5% of candidates were flagged for AI-cheating behavior across 19,368 tracked interviews between July 2025 and January 2026. That rate tripled in three months.

Deepfake fraud attempts in hiring rose 1,300% between 2023 and 2024.

72% of recruiting leaders are now conducting in-person interviews specifically to combat fraud. Google and McKinsey have reintroduced mandatory in-person interviews at scale.

Gartner projects that by 2028, one in four candidate profiles worldwide will be fake.

For the hiring managers we work with, the practical question is not whether AI hiring fraud will show up in your pipeline. It already has, whether it has been caught or not. The question is what verification is running before the offer goes out.

More on how we are addressing this next week.

91% of US hiring managers have encountered AI-generated interview answers.

Only 19% are confident their current process would catch a fraudulent applicant.

Those two numbers come from separate 2026 industry studies, and together they describe a hiring reality most companies have not yet caught up to. The candidate on your Zoom interview may not be the person you are about to hire.

The categories of fraud showing up across the industry:

Resume fraud, at scale. AI tools generate resumes tailored to specific job descriptions with plausible metrics and formatting that passes ATS screening. 63% of fraudulent applicants pass ATS filters undetected.

Deepfake candidates. Palo Alto Networks found it takes 70 minutes for someone with zero image manipulation experience to create a fake candidate capable of passing a video interview.

Proxy interviews. Someone else attends the interview on the candidate's behalf. The actual hire shows up on Day 1.

State-sponsored fraud at scale. The FBI has publicly warned about North Korean IT worker schemes that generated an estimated 2.8 billion dollars by placing fake candidates in real US companies. Eight US-based facilitators have been sentenced in 2026 alone.

None of this is theoretical. It is the current baseline of what hiring verification has to catch.

More on how we are addressing it this week.

Today we are celebrating the growth of three leaders who have shaped this firm for years, and who will shape what it becomes next! 🎉

Robin Elkins is now our Chief Revenue Officer. More than fifteen years in staffing built the strategic relationships, operational depth, and team leadership Robin brings to this role every day. Her judgment has made TEWS sharper. Her partnership with clients has made them better served. This next chapter is one she has earned!

Jacob Fessler is now our Vice President of Professional Services. Since 2008, Jacob has led our Technology division through every version of the market this industry has thrown at us. His steady hand, depth of expertise, and genuine care for clients and candidates alike are special. Expanding his leadership to Professional Services is a natural next step!

Whitney Saylor is now our Vice President of Corporate Services. Twenty-two years in, Whitney continues to define what long-tenured leadership at TEWS looks like. Her relationships across HR, admin, and executive support are the connective tissue of our firm, and the reason so many of our client partnerships endure across years and companies.

Robin, Jacob, Whitney: thank you for the work, the leadership, and the years. We are lucky to move into this next chapter with you. 💚🌱

What we're paying attention to in compensation this summer:

👉Accounting & Finance: senior roles are holding steady. Modest upward movement for controllers and FP&A leaders.

👉Technology: comp continues to move fastest in cybersecurity and senior engineering.

👉Non-Clinical Healthcare and Corporate Services: steady, focused adjustment at revenue cycle and executive support levels.

None of it is dramatic. All of it is worth calibrating against.

Central Florida hiring in August tends to reveal what January's plan actually assumed.

The compensation bands we set in Q1 get pressure-tested. The talent pipelines we thought would be full sometimes aren't. The hires we deferred until 'after summer' compete against everyone else who did the same.

None of that is bad news. It's just the mid-year sound of a hiring plan meeting reality.

Three questions we've been asking clients this month:

1. Are your current offer letters still competitive with where the market sits today?
2. Are the roles you're planning to open in Q4 already in motion, or still waiting for September?
3. Are there conversations with your current team that would be easier to have now than in November?

Not urgent questions. Just useful ones.

One month into Q3. Three things our recruiters are seeing across Central Florida:

1. Hiring managers who waited out summer are now competing for the same candidates as the ones who started in June. The pause didn't reduce demand, it compressed timelines.

2. Senior talent is willing to take calls but slower to make moves. The ones moving are moving for clearer reasons.

3. Counter-offers are getting more aggressive. Hires who would have accepted at the offered comp 18 months ago are now negotiating with two competing offers.

If you're entering August with open roles, our recruiters are here. 20 minutes with the right person on our team is often the fastest path from where you are to where you need to be. Comment CONNECT or DM us.
