Understand the line of fire.

One of the most common causes of jobsite injuries is being in the path of moving equipment, shifting materials, released pressure, or falling objects. Before starting any task, take a moment to identify where tools, materials, machinery, or stored energy could move unexpectedly.

Ask yourself: If something slips, breaks, swings, drops, or releases pressure, where will it go? Then position yourself outside that danger zone.

A few seconds of planning can prevent serious injuries. Stay aware, stay out of the line of fire, and help keep your crew safe.

This week, we're excited to introduce and officially welcome Jeff Kooiman as our new Chief Operating Officer (COO).

While Jeff has been full-time with Arena for the past five months, he has been a trusted consultant and strategic partner to the organization for more than seven years. His deep understanding of our business, combined with his leadership and operational expertise, makes him a natural fit to help lead Arena into its next chapter of growth.

As a High D on the DISC profile, Jeff is results-driven and focused on continuous improvement. One of his favorite leadership principles is: "Follow the spec (SOP), or change it." Combined with regular one-on-one conversations, this approach helps create clarity, accountability, and strong team performance.

Verify energy isolation before beginning maintenance or repairs.

A powered down machine is not always safe. Equipment can still hold stored or residual energy from electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or gravity sources that may activate unexpectedly.

Before starting work, complete full lockout/tagout procedures, isolate all energy sources, and physically verify zero energy. Do not rely on switches or indicators alone.

Confirming true energy isolation is a critical step in preventing unexpected startup and keeping the jobsite safe.

Meet Leigh Walker, VP of Direct Hire. From Sydney, Australia to helping lead and grow Arena's Direct Hire division, Leigh brings a passion for people, relationships, and results to everything he does.

With 1.5 years at Arena, Leigh's favorite Vital Factor is Relationships because he believes they are the foundation of success in business and life.

His goal for 2026? Continue building and scaling our thriving Direct Hire team while creating opportunities for both clients and candidates to succeed.

Account for air movement hazards.

Fans, blowers, and pressurized HVAC systems can start unexpectedly if energy sources are not fully isolated. Moving parts and sudden airflow can create serious injury risks during servicing or maintenance.

Before beginning work, confirm the system is in a true zero energy state, secure moving components, and follow proper lockout/tagout procedures. Never assume a unit is safe just because it appears powered down.

Taking the time to verify isolation helps protect both you and your crew on the jobsite.

Jobsite hazards can change fast throughout the day. Rain, wind, new crews, moving equipment, or shifted materials can all create new risks mid shift.

Stay alert and reassess your surroundings regularly, not just during the morning safety meeting. Taking a few moments to scan the area can help prevent accidents before they happen.

Safe crews stay aware, communicate, and adjust as conditions change.
