Five years ago, if you were unemployed, many hiring leaders saw it as a risk.

Now? Itโ€™s the norm for most hiring companies.

There have been so many layoffs across industries.

Great talent is on the market - not because they failed, but because companies restructured, got acquired, or had to make cuts.
I am sometimes amazed at great people who are just with the wrong company at the wrong time. โ€œI never set out to be a recruiter. In fact, I never even held the title.โ€

I was an HR leader across public companies, niche players, and everything in between. Like many in HR, I wore all the hats... and somehow, I always ended up smack in the middle of ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ.

Why? Because the #1 complaint I heard from executives was:
๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œTalent is my #1 challengeโ€

That stuck with me. Because if HR exists to solve business problems, what better way to add value than to build the team that makes everything else possible?

But I didnโ€™t recruit the โ€œtraditionalโ€ way. I brought ๐˜ง๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ณ (yes, flair!) - creative storytelling, strategic referrals, and zero regurgitated job descriptions.

Eventually, a former exec asked me for help staffing his team again. โ€œYou know what great looks like,โ€ he said. That was the nudge I needed.

No recruiter title. No formal training. Just results.

Now I do this full time. And yes, I was floored when I realized what companies were willing to pay for help filling a few key roles.

โ†’ Expectations on transparency

โ†’ How tolerant the team is of ambiguity

I recently worked on a role where the company had is bold, very transparent, sense or urgency is freakish, (even with my standards which I have been told are a bit on the high side) and you may even hear a few *&*^^&^% words not towards each other just bit of the conversation.

It wasnโ€™t a skills issue. It was culture fit.

Resume gaps and role changes are common in manufacturing.

Out of the 2 hires:
โ†’ One candidate had a role eliminated after an acquisition in addition to TWO plant closings...
โ†’ Anotherโ€™s role was cut due to company consolidation.

Manufacturing, tech, and many other industries go through constant change.
Acquisitions happen. Leadership changes. Restructuring is normal.

If youโ€™ve been impacted by any of this, donโ€™t try to hide it.

- Position consolidated in restructure

As a recruiter, I ask about the story anyway.

Be ready to explain it โ€” clearly, confidently, and honestly.

And hiring managers: if you see gaps or changes, ask about the story.

It often says more about the company than about the candidate.

20,000 followers on LinkedIn. And yetโ€ฆ most of the impact? Totally invisible.

Iโ€™ve been in the game for a while. And if thereโ€™s one thing Iโ€™ve learned, itโ€™s that showing up consistently doesnโ€™t always give you instant feedback.

But hereโ€™s what often happens:
You go to the gym. Or an event. Someone says, โ€œHeyโ€”I saw your video.โ€
And youโ€™re likeโ€ฆ wait, what video?

Thatโ€™s the invisible impact.

Thatโ€™s the brand youโ€™re building even when it feels like nobodyโ€™s watching.

If youโ€™re a recruiter, a candidate, a professional trying to stand out, posting can feel like shouting into the void.
But the moment someone googles you, lands on your profile, or gets a message from youโ€ฆ

Thatโ€™s when your content does the talking.

Hereโ€™s what helped me be consistent on LinkedIn:
