I’ve been recruiting for a long time, and I’ll tell you this: some of the things that used to be considered “soft skills” aren’t very soft anymore. Self-awareness. Communication. Emotional regulation. The ability to read people, take feedback, handle pressure and adjust when things don’t go exactly as planned. Those things MATTER.

And I think they’re going to matter even more as AI changes the workplace.

AI can take over repetitive tasks, automate processes and make us more efficient. What it can’t replace nearly as easily is the human side of work.
Can you communicate with your team?
Can you handle conflict without creating MORE conflict?
Can you take direction and adjust?
Can you recognize when the person across from you needs a different approach?
Can you keep your composure when the day goes sideways?

After 30+ years in staffing, I can tell you that some of the best hires I’ve ever seen weren’t necessarily the candidates with the “perfect” resume. They were the people who could communicate, adapt, solve problems and work well with other people. That’s also why recruiting has to be about more than matching keywords on a resume. A good recruiter is listening to HOW someone communicates. We’re asking questions. We’re paying attention to how they talk about former employers, how they’ve handled difficult situations, what motivates them and how they respond when things don’t go their way. We’re recruiting the PERSON — not just the resume. As AI continues to change what people do at work, I think emotional intelligence is going to become one of the biggest differentiators between an employee who can simply DO the job and one who can truly be successful in it.
