Interview mode: ON. Iced coffee: still in hand. 🧋

Would bringing it into a job interview affect your first impression of the candidate?

My take as an executive recruiter:

An iced coffee is not a competency test, but an interview is partly a judgment test.

I wouldn’t reject a qualified candidate because of a beverage. But interviews are full of small signals, and situational awareness matters, especially in executive, legal and client-facing roles.

Some interviewers see coffee as completely normal. Others interpret it as too casual.

Is that a valid measure of professionalism or an outdated, unwritten rule?

Tell me where you land below. 👇

Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak with Arizona legal leaders about something I believe deeply:

Hiring is not just about filling an open seat.

It’s about getting clear on who you need, why you need them, and creating the systems that allow the right people to succeed once they walk through the door.

That’s the same philosophy behind The Human Capital Playbook and the work I do every day with growing organizations through Tait Consulting.

Because recruiting is only one piece of the puzzle.

The bigger question is: Are your people practices actually helping you build the business you’re trying to build?

I love bringing these conversations into a room — whether I’m speaking to 20 leaders or 200.

If your organization, leadership team, association, or conference is looking for a speaker on hiring, retention, leadership, culture, or building a people strategy that supports growth, I’d love to connect.

Every firm owner who tells me he’s too small for HR already has HR. It’s him, on a Sunday, doing the comp conversation he’s been avoiding since March.
The handbook from when you had four people. The paralegal who raised her workload and got a “let’s circle back.” The offer letter written from memory. None of it disappears because there’s no HR seat. It just gets handled badly by whoever bills the most per hour in the building.
That’s the whole case for fractional. Not a department. A few hours a month against the pile you keep moving to the weekend.

If your handbook predates your current office, DM me HANDBOOK.

Your turnover problem isn’t a hiring problem. It’s a trust problem.

People don’t quit jobs. They quit feeling invisible.

By the time someone hands in their notice, they checked out months ago and you probably saw the signs and second-guessed them.

The fix isn’t another job posting. It’s a talent strategy built on trust, visibility, and a real path forward.

If your best people are walking out the door and you can’t quite explain why, that’s exactly the conversation we should be having.

DM me “TRUST” and let’s talk about what’s actually driving your turnover. 👇

Ever walked into a room and felt like everyone else already belonged… except you?

That was me.

New team. Tight-knit culture. Non-traditional background. And a quiet pressure to prove I deserved a seat at the table.

What people don’t always see is that HR wasn’t a straight path for me. It was built through pivots, doubt, and figuring it out in real time.

This moment, joining a small team in Phoenix was where everything started to click. Not because I had it all figured out, but because I decided I would.

🎥 Sharing a piece of that journey from The Human Capital Playbook

If you’ve ever:

* Questioned if you’re “qualified enough”
* Stepped into a team where you had to earn trust
* Or taken a non-linear path to get where you are…

This chapter is for you.
