Code Enforcement Education and News

Code Enforcement Education and News This page is all about code enforcement. What different cities are doing and what is going on in the profession.

This may not be a popular video because many of us are pet lovers, but sometimes rules are made for a reason.

Too many pets on one property can create bigger issues than people realize. Cities may have rules or limits to help protect the animals, the people living in the home, and the surrounding neighborhood. When there are too many animals, it can lead to sanitation problems, odors, noise, waste buildup, unsafe living conditions, and concerns about proper care, shelter, and space for each pet.

Code compliance is not about being against pets. It is about making sure animals are cared for safely and that homes remain healthy for everyone nearby.

Thank you to Officer Richard and City of Cathedral City Code Compliance Manager Justin Gardiner for sharing this important information.

Fire inspections play a critical role in protecting lives, property, and the communities we serve. For code enforcement professionals looking to expand their knowledge, understanding the fundamentals of fire and life safety is an invaluable skill that strengthens both field awareness and professional growth.

At the 2026 CodeComply Summit, the International Code Council presents Intro to Fire Inspection Parts 1 & 2, led by ICC Technical Trainer John Swanson. Drawing on more than 30 years of experience in fire protection, life safety, inspections, and code enforcement, John provides a practical introduction to the principles, responsibilities, and real-world application of fire inspections.

Participants will learn how inspectors identify hazards, evaluate means of egress, understand occupancy requirements, recognize fire protection systems, document findings, and apply codes consistently in the field. Whether you are new to code enforcement or looking to broaden your expertise, this course offers a strong foundation for understanding how fire inspections contribute to safer buildings, reduced risk, and stronger communities.

Every interaction in code enforcement has the potential to shape the outcome of a case. Often, the difference between cooperation and conflict comes down to how we communicate.

At the 2026 CodeComply Summit, retired law enforcement lieutenant John Strain from Chief Leadership will lead Effective Field Communication Techniques & Using Emotional Intelligence, a practical session focused on the skills that help professionals navigate difficult conversations with confidence and professionalism. Drawing on 30 years of experience in patrol, investigations, SWAT, training, and leadership, John shares real-world strategies that help officers build rapport, manage emotions, improve situational awareness, and reduce conflict before situations escalate.

This course reminds us that officer safety starts long before a confrontation becomes physical. Strong communication, empathy, and emotional intelligence are not just leadership skills. They are essential tools that help create safer interactions, stronger community relationships, and better outcomes for everyone involved.

For many of us in supervisory more management positions, we never get formal training on how to actually do many supervisory tasks that is common when we transition into those roles. This is why we have this course: Introduction to Employee Evaluations in our Career Development and Growth Track

Employee evaluations can be one of the toughest responsibilities for new supervisors, especially in code enforcement. This course gives emerging leaders a practical introduction to preparing, writing, and delivering evaluations in a clear, fair, and professional way.

Led by Sara Kelley, Code Enforcement Manager for the City of Hemet, the session will cover common evaluation areas such as job performance, communication, professionalism, productivity, consistency, goal-setting, leadership potential, and areas for improvement. Attendees will also learn how to give constructive feedback, document performance properly, support employee growth, and use evaluations as a leadership tool that builds accountability and trust.
