Don’t Overthink it!
If there is someone you think would be perfect for a job you’re trying to fill, reach out to them!

Never over-qualify someone when you are sourcing talent.

Never assume that your potential candidate would “never leave” his great job, company, or title.

YOU NEVER KNOW.

You never know what is happening at their job. Maybe they have a boss they don’t love. Maybe they are uninspired. Maybe they are ready for a change. Maybe it’s not about the money. Maybe their company just implemented a new policy that they don’t agree with. Maybe their commute stinks. YOU NEVER KNOW.

Every single time I reach out to someone, I assume that my opportunity is THE BEST OUT THERE and that they would be silly not to have a chat. In my mind I am picturing the candidate suffering on an awful commute, sitting in an uninspiring setting, or simply bored in a job/company that is not doing it for them anymore.

I pretend that the person is waiting for someone like me to reach out to them. Some of my most successful placements have been sourced, meaning, the person did not answer an ad, but I found them, ‘saved’ them out of their current situation.

A friend of mine told me about someone she thought would be perfect for a position in her company. I gave her some pointers, simple: reach out. Ask her if she’s open to a chat. She did that, and the person was not only open, she wanted to work at my friend’s company! It was a simple ask, but had my friend assumed she was not interested, she would have never gotten her dream employee!

Don’t overthink it. Just reach out.

I once had a candidate ask me if the term headhunter is still used and if I find it offensive. (No it’s not, and no I don’t, to be clear!) The term became popular in the 50’s and 60’s when headhunters were known to “pirate” the heads and key people of a corporation, leaving them without leadership. The more politically correct term is Executive Recruiter. Whatever you want to call me, it’s fine by me! Personally, I like Recruiter. 😊

Your PTO is yours!
Personal Time Off
Don’t ignore it. Have a team mate answer your emails.
Don’t work while on vacation.

With the wonderful evolution of technology, we have become connected more than ever. In fact, the expectation is now that if one receives an email, even if on the other side of the world, they should at some point “check in” and answer.

This may be a controversial opinion, but I’m of the mindset that vacation should be a time to fully be off. One should be able to set up systems and coverage where all emails are answered, no client call gets missed, and projects move ahead as they should.

What do you think? Should vacation be a time to disconnect fully? Answer emails a few times during the week? Or check in daily?

Yesterday’s Tuesday Tip about maintaining a healthy workplace got a lot of people talking. So it got me to thinking, how do you know if you’re the toxic one at work?

As a recruiter, I hear both sides of the story. Employers who vent about employees being entitled, uncaring, lazy, and sometimes incompetent. And employees who complain about petty office politics, mean girl/mean boy drama, bosses who give no direction, passive/aggressive messaging, and lack of boundaries in off hours. While both sides may have merit at times, I do see some areas where there is a lack of understanding and a chance for rehabilitation. After all, you liked each other when you interviewed. We can fix those minor issues. Some notes below:

📈Employers: Understand that your employee is working hard. Often times we don’t realize how much time a task may take and have unrealistic expectations.
💼Employees: log your tasks/time spent on them.

📈Employers: Have clear directives for your employees. If you don’t like the way something is done, be specific as to what you want/need.
💼Employees: don’t take direction or criticism personally. Identify your common goal and ask questions so you can hone in on producing a favorable outcome.

📈Employers: Respect your employees’ time. Everyone deserves to recharge their batteries at the end of the day and having your staff stretched so thin can only go so far. When your employee expresses concern, listen to them. Everyone works better when they can rest and refuel.
💼Employees: Work efficiently. I sometimes hear people complain about being overworked yet they will spend 30 minutes chatting with a colleague or on a call. If you do work overtime, talk to your boss about recouping some of that time when the project is over.

Most problems can be solved with honest and clear communication.

I don’t think the solution is always quitting or firing someone. Fixing it is cost effective and creates long term personal and professional growth!

I have the pocket listing of real estate talent. This quote has become synonymous with being the “go-to recruiter in real estate.” A pocket listing, or an “off-market” listing in real estate, is always intriguing!

In June, I successfully placed four talented individuals in key roles:
- Director of Residential Marketing: A remarkable candidate I knew from my extensive experience in Multifamily Leasing and Property Management.
- Leasing Director: This candidate, who turned out to be the perfect fit, came from a rejection email for another role.
- Asset Manager: I have known this candidate since 2019, and after staying in touch, we found the ideal opportunity for him.
- Regional Community Manager: Surprisingly, this candidate responded to a Ziprecruiter ad!

*TESTIMONIAL THURSDAY*
I love connecting with people, and I get to meet so many wonderful candidates in the process. It was a pleasure working with Tommy last month and helping him land a Leasing Manager position in a stunning new development building, being marketed by my
client,
MNS does outstanding work representing Developers in both leasing and sales, and we are thrilled to be working with them!

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I want to talk about love. That is, how can recruiters show candidates a little love?! ❤️

Job seekers need love. They may be vulnerable. They may be defensive. They may have gotten hurt, or feel skeptical. Maybe, in their last work relationship, they weren’t appreciated. Maybe they weren’t recognized. Maybe they gave a lot and got burned and so they decided to move on. On the other hand, maybe they got dumped! No matter what the circumstance, everyone deserves love. So how do I show candidates love when I’m interviewing them?

1) Information. I try to give as much information as possible. This isn’t the CIA. Of course, I will tell you who the employer is, and not only that, I’m going to give you as much information as I possibly can so that you can be prepared when you go to the interview.

2) Coaching. I’m going to coach candidates and give them some pointers on how to best approach the interview and set themselves up for success.

3) Communication. I’m going to try to stay in touch with the candidates as much as I possibly can and keep them informed of what’s going on. Sometimes even no news is communicated so that the person understands where they’re at.

The process of looking for a job can start to mess with your mindset and with what you think about yourself. Do not fall into that trap! Just like in love, there’s a “lid for every pot” and there’s a job for everyone. So I do my small part by showing candidates kindness and courtesy throughout this stressful and challenging time.

When was the last time you looked for a job? Was the process stressful or smooth? Was there anyone that was helpful in making the process easier? Pls share the love! ❤️

In yesterday’s Tuesday Tip series, a point was made about the importance of likeability during job interviews. It was stated that candidates who come off as awkward or uncomfortable are less likely to receive job offers. However, hiring managers should be careful not to rush to conclusions based solely on a candidate’s charisma or personality. While it is important to work with someone you like, it is also crucial to give them a thorough assessment to determine if they truly meet the qualifications for the job.

A past experience was shared where a candidate was hired based on their impressive resume and charismatic personality, but they didn’t perform as expected after being hired. The lesson learned was that it is important to ask more probing questions during the interview process, spend time with the candidate, and listen closely to what they are saying (and not saying).

Have you ever made the mistake of hiring someone based on the wrong reasons? Share your experience in the comments below.

I have been in shock since Saturday, not wanting to believe the videos, images, and stories I’ve seen and heard coming from Israel. It’s senseless, horrific and devastating. Praying for peace and resolution. 🙏🏼 😢 💙
