If you’re going to ask a candidate about their salary expectations, you need to be aware that your reactions to their response (both verbal and non-verbal) can have a profound impact on their ultimate perception of the offer.

We had a candidate meet with a company earlier this week. In our conversations with her, she was very comfortable with anywhere from $130-$140k on a base.

On that interview, the hiring manager asked her about her desired salary and she shared that $140k would be ideal.

His response:

“Ok that seems to be in line.”

They reached out yesterday to make the offer and low and behold they want to go in at $130k.

While that might’ve been an easy close originally, they’ve made their lives much more difficult based on that recent interaction.

The takeaway?

Prep your interview team on budget, expectations and most importantly, how to react in the event that salary is discussed. Anyone who is empowered to address salary with a candidate must also be trained on how to react to the answer, whether it be higher, low or right on target with budget.
