Should you write your resume or use AI?

Resumes: AI vs. Human

Should you use AI to write your resume? AI can help professionals ensure their resume will pass an ATS system, tailor keywords to fit the job requirements, offer editing assistance and make sure your personal information is safe. But can AI do everything?
First, you must find the right AI resume builder. Look for customizable templates, ATS optimization, editing support and security. Job-matching suggestions are also available.
Remember, AI can’t do everything. It can assist you. You want a strong headline/summary and that is up to you to create. You should use standard headings, industry keywords, and a simple format. Many resume builders will allow you to test your resume and make suggestions to help make it more ATS friendly.
-- An AI resume builder will allow you to customize your resume for each job submission quickly. You must provide the context for the resume. It’s important that an applicant’s personality comes through. Fully AI resumes are easily detected and usually eliminated from a search.
-- AI resume builders have built-in ATS optimization with automated keyword suggestions to match the job description. While some applicants can do this, most have difficulty with it.
-- AI generated are less expensive (or free) vs. hiring someone to write your resume.
-- You want to make sure your resume reflects you and your story. AI can’t do this so AI generated resumes can be very generic.
-- AI editing can be helpful, but it can also create errors. A mix of AI and human editing is necessary.
-- AI can help you create job customized resumes very quickly. Resume formatting tools can be great for this.
-- AI does not understand different industries/disciplines so the writer must create this.
TIP: For most mid to senior level opportunities, a human resume still works best. However, using some AI tools can help you optimize and customize your resume.

Find Me, Please: 8 Steps to Help a Headhunter Find You

Attracting headhunters is easy. You just have to attract them to you. Here are some steps to help you get noticed.
1. Your reputation. You must be out there to be in the game. Google yourself and see what shows up. Add content to your social media sites. Clean up old posts.
2. Your LinkedIn profile. Keep it updated and have clear, concise descriptions of what you have done/are doing. Make sure the dates, titles etc. agree with your resume.
3. Keep and update your network. Whether it’s a headhunter, association contact or friend, you want to stay in touch. You can check in, send birthday/holiday greetings, congratulate them, acknowledge their online content and share information. If they find out about a position, you want them to remember you.
4. Prepare. If you get a call, be able to speak about new and creative ideas you have implemented or suggested, how you are helping/mentoring staff, what are your shortcomings and what are you doing to improve. Show that you are a leader.
5. Keep up on industry trends and how you are incorporating them into your job. Attend industry events and meetings, headhunters do.
6. Act like a leader, let your confidence come through on the phone/zoom meeting.
7. Make sure your career shows progress. No one wants a job hopper, but they do want someone who has seized the right opportunities. Each move you have made should show progression toward your goals.
8. Don’t forget to research and seek out headhunters. Introduce yourself. They may not have something for you right away, but they won’t forget you if you present yourself properly.

Laid off? 5 Tips For Networking

Layoffs happen. Don’t dwell on the situation. Instead, start networking for your next position. Here’s some help to get you started.
1. Review your network. Don’t have one? Start developing one immediately. Start connecting with former bosses and co-workers, friends/family in your area of expertise or in an area of interest to you, former clients/contractors, connections on your social media.
2. Develop your message. Know what you want to say before you connect with anyone. You want to be positive, avoid long explanations of what happened and ask for specific help.
3. Remember not to say anything negative about your employer. Word spreads quickly.
4. Connect with your trusted contacts first. It can only take one ‘right’ connection, and you need to keep track of who you are speaking with and follow-ups.
5. Know what you want and who can help you. If you are looking in different areas, take the time to determine who can help with each area. Don’t be too general with your connections or ask them for too much assistance.

Resume Rules: 2025

The current trends for resumes in 2025 center around getting past applicant tracking systems (ATS). Here’s what to expect:
1. ATS software use is expected to grow into 2029. In addition, expect to see more company’s using Candidate Relationship Management systems, digital interviewing platforms and chatbots.
2. Clean layouts will be a must. Organized layouts are easier for ATS to read and allow recruiters to scan easily. Use strong headings, bullet points and have plenty of white space.
3. Use keywords strategically.
4. Your resume must reflect your brand. Your summary is important and should reflect your goals and top qualifications.
5. All your online sites must reflect your goals, be aligned with your resume and be professional.
6. If you have samples, create an online portfolio.
7. Freelancing, contract projects etc. belong on your resumes.
8. Beware of AI-generated resumes. Most hiring managers see these as a big red flag.
Remember, resumes customized for a specific job, rule the day.

10 Questions To Ask Your Interviewer

You practice the answers to questions the hiring manager might ask you, but do you practice the questions to ask the interviewer/hiring manager? Asking questions shows your engagement and interest in a position. Questions keep the interview moving in a positive way and the right questions can help you determine if this is the perfect job for you.
1. What are the goals for this position? When and how will I be measured against these goals? Will I be reviewed in 3 or 6 months, a year and will it be against profits or increased exposure etc.?
2. Why is this job open? What happened to the previous holder?
How many people have had this job in the last ten years?
3. If it’s a new position, what made the company decide to add it.
4. What’s the career path for this position? If it’s the highest post in your discipline, is there an opportunity to expand it, move to a new area etc.
5. What’s the overall corporate culture? What is the culture of the department and is it one that works, or would you like to see it change? Ask the interviewer what they like most about the company/department.
6. What departments will I be working with on a daily basis. If I will be assisting these departments, how will my work with them be measured?
7. Who will be my direct supervisor? Will any other employees have input into my position.
8. What is the percentage of travel involved and to where? Will it be planned ahead of time or just come up.
9. Is there anything about my background that you don’t think is a good fit for this position? If there is, you can use this opportunity to explain or cite examples. Also, ask if there is any more information you can provide.
10. What are the next steps? If you are working with an outside recruiter, you can ask them as they will be following up on your interview.
Ask questions that will help you decide if this is the right spot for you. DO NOT ask questions about health benefits, hours, vacation or salary. Wait until you know they have an interest in you or ask your recruiter.
