I had a conversation this morning with a managing partner who boiled it down to three things:
1️⃣ Technical expertise and autonomy
2️⃣ The ability to delegate and collaborate effectively
3️⃣ The ability to build and maintain real client relationships
That third point matters more than many people realize.
The partners who are getting ahead aren’t just excellent lawyers. They’re visible, relationship-oriented and comfortable socializing with clients outside the office.
In many firms, that’s becoming a differentiator.
And over time, those relationships become critical to succession planning and long-term client retention.
