Learning in Real Life: Why Skills Stick Better in Daily Routines

She does it perfectly in therapy. But at home? Nothing

This isn't failure. It's called the generalization problem — and it's one of the most important things to understand about early intervention

Skills don't automatically transfer from one context to another A child who learns to request in a therapy room has learned to request in a therapy room. For that skill to show up at the kitchen table, the playground, or grandma's house — it has to be practiced there too
The most powerful learning happens in real routines

→ Mealtime: requesting, commenting, tolerating variety
→ Bath time: directions, sequencing, vocabulary
→ Getting dressed: choices, body awareness, frustration tolerance
→ Car rides: transitions, communication, waiting

Parents aren't just supporters of therapy They're the most important teachers in the room — because the room that matters most is home.

Gestalt Language Processing: When Kids Learn Language in Chunks

Your child just said a perfect, fluent 8-word sentence—something they’ve never said before—completely out of context.

You’re amazed… and also confused.
Welcome to Gestalt Language Processing (GLP).

Many people think language develops as:
single words → two words → sentences.

But some children—many of them autistic—learn language in a different way. They absorb whole phrases like “let’s go bye-bye” or “do you want to play?” as one unit, then gradually break those chunks down to build their own flexible, original language.

✨ Echolalia isn’t meaningless—it’s communication.
✨ Scripts aren’t “just parroting”—they’re building blocks.
✨ If a phrase seems out of place, look for what the child is trying to express.

Meeting a gestalt language processor where they are—rather than pushing them to abandon their chunks—is how language truly develops 🤝

⭐ Terminology Tuesday

Motor Planning: Why Some Kids Know What to Do but Can't Do It Yet

Your child knows how to put on their shoes . They've seen it done hundreds of times. They want to do it. And yet every single attempt is a mess.

This is motor planning — and the gap between knowing and doing is real.
Motor planning (or praxis) is the ability to conceptualize, sequence, and execute a new motor action. It's not about strength. It's about the brain's ability to organize movement into a plan.

What it looks like :

→ Learns physical tasks much more slowly than expected
→ Inconsistent — sometimes gets it, sometimes completely falls apart
→ Needs significantly more help with hand-over-hand guidance but can't do it independently
→ Avoids or refuses new physical challenges
→ Intense frustration that doesn't match the difficulty

This child is working harder than you know. Their effort isn't the issue. Their brain needs a different kind of support.

OT Is More Than Fine Motor

"She was referred to OT — is that just for pencil grip?" ✏️🤔
No. OT is for the whole child.

Occupational therapy addresses anything that affects a child's ability to participate in daily life — and for young children, that is a very long list.

OT can include:
→ Sensory processing and regulation
→ Getting dressed, eating, bathing, grooming
→ Tolerating transitions and new environments
→ Play skills and physical participation
→ Postural stability and coordination
→ Emotional regulation strategies
→ Fine motor (yes, including pencil grip — but that's just one small piece)

If a child is struggling with the things that make up a day — the getting ready, the mealtimes, the sitting at school, the playground — OT is often exactly the right support. ✅

Tag a parent who didn't know how broad OT really is.
