While aboard the USS Hartford (SSN-768) in the Arctic Ocean as part of ICEX in 2018, as the crew was celebrating the 60th anniversary of the USS Nautilus’ (SSN-571) voyage under the Arctic Sea, they created the idea of an U.S. Navy Arctic Service Medal.

The crew took their idea to the Skipper, who said, OK sounds good, make it more than just an idea and then we can submit it to the U.S. Navy. They did, and six years later, the Arctic Service Medal has become a reality. A few members of the original Hartford’s crew were given the medal at the first-ever U.S. Navy Arctic Service Medal award ceremony which took place in the Submarine Capital of the World just down the street from the USS Nautilus, last week.
