📄 Your resume probably isn’t as good as you think it is.

That might be uncomfortable to hear, but if you’re applying for jobs that genuinely match your experience and consistently hearing nothing back, your resume is one of the first places I’d look.

After more than 25 years in recruiting, I’ve seen plenty of talented, experienced candidates undersell themselves because their resume lists responsibilities instead of accomplishments, buries their most valuable experience, relies on generic language or tries so hard to “beat the ATS” that it forgets about the human being who eventually has to read it.

In my latest article for Jersey Hired, I look at what actually makes a resume effective, the mistakes candidates continue to make and why your career may be considerably better than your resume makes it look.

Professionalism matters. Look for it in how someone prepares, communicates and treats others.

🤖 LinkedIn is changing the way we search for jobs, but is AI really the answer?

LinkedIn says it is gradually retiring its classic job search as it moves users toward its new AI-powered search experience.

There are certainly benefits to AI in recruitment, but I think there’s a bigger question we need to be asking: why should job seekers have less control over how they search for work?

Traditional search lets you choose the job title, keywords, location and filters that matter to you. AI search interprets what it thinks you mean and decides which opportunities are most relevant.

For employers, there’s another concern. If algorithms increasingly sit between the employer and the candidate, are great people, particularly career changers and candidates with unconventional backgrounds, going to become harder to find?

AI should make recruitment better. It shouldn't automate the humanity out of hiring.

📊 New Jersey lost 1,700 jobs in August, but unemployment fell to 4.3%. What does that mean for your business or job search?

The latest report shows an uneven market:

✅ Leisure and hospitality added 3,400 jobs.
✅ Construction added 1,000 jobs.
📉 Professional and business services lost 3,500 jobs.
🏢 Private sector employment was nearly flat, adding just 200 jobs.

For employers, recruiting conditions still depend on the role and industry.

For job seekers, a targeted search matters, and a sector losing jobs can still have openings.
