Ortloff Organ Company is a pipe organ building, restoration, and maintenance firm based in greater Boston, Massachusetts. The firm also supplies new and replica components to the trade including consoles, windchests, and reservoirs, and maintains a roster of service clients throughout the Northeast. Jonathan Ortloff, founder and president, is a lifelong musician and holds degrees from the Eastman

School of Music and the University of Rochester in organ performance and engineering. He apprenticed under organbuilder and pipemaker Stephen Russell for nine years, playing major roles in the design, construction, and installation of over a dozen instruments. Subsequent employment at Spencer Organ Company, Inc. provided in-depth work in organ restoration. Fisk, Inc. and Spencer Organ Company, Inc. Our staff of four, in addition to being skilled craftsmen, are all organists and/or church musicians, bringing an intimate knowledge of the demands placed upon our instruments in their most common use - accompaniment of corporate worship and choral music. Whether designing and building a new instrument, or restoring or rebuilding an existing instrument, work of the highest quality is paramount, using materials and techniques for maximum longevity and reliability. In restoration, the original builder's work and intent is honored as far as possible in all aspects. Our 3,200-square foot workshop is located in Needham, Massachusetts, and we always welcome visitors to see our work in progress.

With a final tuning this afternoon, our work at St. James comes to an end. We leave with hearts full of gratitude for the opportunity to practice our art in this very special place. Look for announcement in the fall for dedication events.

For now, here are Opus 6’s glamor shots!

We are delighted to welcome Sol Rizzato to Ortloff Organ Company. Sol's addition to our team, and the experience he brings in voicing and service work will be invaluable as the company continues to grow, with a healthy backlog of large projects, as well as an ever-expanding maintenance roster.

Sol joins us from Ohio where he served as lead voicer and a lead service technician at the Muller Pipe Organ Company. He began his career as an organbuilder at the Red River Pipe Organ Company in Norman, Oklahoma and worked as an intern with Messrs. Czelusniak et Dugal, inc. of Northampton, Massachusetts. Sol holds a master’s degree in Organ Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and dual bachelor’s degrees from the University of Oklahoma (Organ Performance and Viola Performance). Sol enjoys transcribing orchestral works for the organ, has served as a church musician for several denominations, and enjoys teaching students who are new to the organ. Outside of work, he enjoys playing viola and orchestral keyboards with various ensembles, spending time with friends, studying theology, and the sports of Olympic weightlifting and fencing.

Sol will start next month; we can't wait to have him on board! (Wesley and Jasper possibly the most excited)

The end of tonal finishing!

We spent three very hot days, and one very cool day, voicing through the Swell, having polished off the Great last time. The weather cooperated, cooling down 20 degrees overnight to a stable 71° allowing us to put the reeds in and regulate them.

Finally getting to hear the full organ with reeds is always a satisfying experience at the end of a project.

Earlier this week, our crew removed the console from Trinity on the Green to begin its rebuilding process in the shop. The interest and support from staff and congregants was palpable as we went about our work. Highlights of the day were a farewell rendition of ST CLEMENT by Walden Moore, and a tour of the Newberry Organ at Yale from Nick Thompson-Allen.

Many thanks go to Christopher Wells for his help in the removal, and also in loaning and setting up his MIDI console, Black Beauty, to play Sister Soosie while the original console is being rebuilt. Thanks to Solid State Logic’s Portal system, the resources of Trinity’s pipe organ remain in use - not even a day went by that the organ wasn’t playable.

We look forward to our work on Soosie in the shop, and her return to New Haven in the Fall.

The Pedal basses are in the background - just the feet of the 16’ Contrabass are visible. The red pipes above the Swell reservoir are the treble of the Pedal Bourdon.

After two long weeks of installation, St. James’ new pipe organ is playing. While there is still more work to do, including tonal finishing, and the installation of the reeds, we are encouraged by its first sounds.

For now, some much-needed time at home before returning in a few weeks.

After 4.5 days of work, there’s not much left to install!
