ELAC CARE

ELAC CARE CARE is a student support program funded by the state to provide services which assist low income single parents succeed in reaching their educational goal

The CARE program was established by the State of California “to help welfare recipients become convinced that they and their children are important, that they are capable, and that with proper support they can break the welfare dependency cycle through education and job training.” CARE is a supplemental component of EOPS that specifically assists students, who are single heads of welfare househol

ds with young children, with supportive services as they acquire the education, training and marketable skills needed to transition from welfare-dependency to employment and eventual self-sufficiency for their families. Every CARE student is an EOPS student who must meet the eligibility criteria for both programs. There are currently 113 CARE programs in all 72 community college districts in California.

General information

In addition to the core supportive services provided by the EOPS program, CARE students may be awarded supplemental grants, services and allowances to pay for educationally-related expenses (such as child care, transportation, textbooks and supplies) not offered by other resources to strengthen their retention, persistence, graduation and transfer rates.
