Some of the most defining career moments start with a conversation you never saw coming.

Gerald Reiter grew up with nine siblings on his family's dairy farm in southeastern Minnesota. When the farm economy took a downturn in the early 1980s, his father encouraged him to find a different career path.

Gerald Reiter found that path in banking and never looked back. From the Farm Credit Administration to leading community banks across central Minnesota, he rose through the ranks before ultimately buying, stabilizing, and transforming Granite Bank into the growing lending partner it is today, with three of his sons now working alongside him.

On hiring, Gerald shared advice from one of his mentors that has stuck with him. It's always worth paying a little more for exceptional talent over settling for mediocre, because a month after they start, you'll forget what you're paying them.
