Brita talks about working with teen girls in the modeling industry

Raising Models

With the fashion industry long known for placing young girls into adult environments, Brita recognized the urgent need for health, safety, and protection within the industry. While raising her own children as a single parent, she also committed herself to caring for young teenage girls pursuing modeling careers.

Twenty years ago, teen models were frequently sent to work in other markets for weeks or even months at a time. Many parents were unable to leave their jobs or families for extended periods, leaving young girls to travel alone without proper supervision or support.

Brita stepped up for her girls — and got on the plane with them.

Whether it was for a few days or an entire month, she traveled and lived alongside the girls in every market they entered. From bedtime stories after long shoot days, to skateboarding through the city, to making sure homework was completed, each girl received the care and guidance she needed — not just as a model, but as a teenager growing up in a demanding industry.

Brita became more than an agent. She became a second parent figure, protector, mentor, and safe place.

Now those girls are grown women, and the bond they share remains just as meaningful today.

It was December 1982. A nine-year-old girl ran down the stairs of her apartment building in Los Angeles and sat beneath an open window, waiting for her teenage neighbor to put on the hottest album in the world. The music floated through the air and filled her soul. When the album ended, she ran to the garage to practice dancing to the rhythms that awakened something deep inside her.

But as she poured her soul into movement, she was accused of "dancing for the devil" and beaten by her stepfather, an evangelistic preacher determined to break what he believed was a spell over her spirit. Still, she returned to that window, filling her heart with the music again so she could throw her soul onto the dance floor once more - only to be met with another beating.

As the girl grew, so did her love for dance. She pushed herself to discover who she truly was, eventually finding herself sitting in front of a camera, unaware that her life was only beginning to take shape. Then came the day she faced the man who had spent years trying to silence her freedom. His hands were cold as he lay motionless before her. At fifteen years old, she shed a tear for the pain he had brought into her life, then walked out of that doorway and onto her first dance studio floor, finally ready to unleash everything the world had tried to hold back.

She sat alone afterward, asking herself who she was meant to become. Around that same time, Michael Jackson was breaking free from his own pain and stepping fully into himself. And on that day, the name Brita Jackson was born.

Here's to 38 years of the name behind the face the public has seen, but never truly known.

Work for a fast pace agency, not just a “running for coffee” job. Your typical responsibilities will include content layout, direction and shooting, editing and learning about fashion. This is a non-paid internship however; we will provide school credit upon request. This is a great way to gain exposure to professionals in the industry and an opportunity to get first-hand experience with various aspects of the business.
