Hospitals lose margin in SPD every day, and most finance teams never see it.

In his latest article, Moab Founder and CEO James Boyette argues that the biggest SPD leak isn’t on the OR schedule. It’s in the staffing model, and its costs are spread across three budgets:
→ Supply chain: loaner tray fees and expedited shipping
→ Labor: long-term agency and travel premiums
→ Capital: instrument repair and replacement
→ Untracked: IUSS used as a routine workaround instead of an emergency exception

Each cost looks manageable on its own. Together, they often add up to more than it would take to fix the problem.

The recommendation for leaders planning 2027 budgets is to stop asking how to cut SPD labor cost. The better question is what instability is costing across the whole organization.

A stable, well-trained SPD team isn’t a cost center to trim. It protects both patient safety and the bottom line.

Every safe surgery starts in Sterile Processing.

Thank you to AORN South Florida Chapter for an outstanding Seminar & Vendor Fair at Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key. Our Founder & CEO James Boyette and VP of SPD Operations Janet Tull CRCST, CIS, CHL spent the day with Perioperative leaders from across South Florida, and the conversations confirmed what we see in every facility we support: when SPD performs, the OR performs.

Instrument availability, first-case on-time starts, and surgical site infection prevention all trace back to the Sterile Processing Department. Yet SPD is still too often treated as a cost center rather than the operational backbone of Surgical Services. Closing that gap takes the right people, the right processes, and strong collaboration between SPD and OR teams.

Thank you to Chapter President Dr. Natalie B. Jones, DHA, MBA, BHSA, BSN, RN, CNOR, and the entire chapter team for bringing this community together. We enjoyed every conversation and look forward to continuing them.
