Law firms are preparing for new generative AI world in (we assume) a bunch of different ways, but they aren't really talking publicly about what they're doing. So it's nice to occasionally get a glimpse behind the curtain.

DLA Piper is aggressively "stress testing" various legal AI tools They're creating "red teams" of lawyers, sys admins, and data scientists to figure out where the tools could cause legal headaches:

“'What we’re doing is building both automated and human attacks, where we go to the large language model and, effectively, try to get it to violate legal standards,' said Danny Tobey, the AI and data analytics chair at DLA Piper." https://buff.ly/3RLthji

Can't wait to see what cool new jailbreaks they come up with . . . remember, sometimes the subject learns just as much about the questioner as the questioner learns about the subject.

This is too good not to share - a New Hampshire attorney under investigation for trust account irregularities, when pressed by ethics investigators for a response, (allegedly) said this in an email:

“'I was on vacation, landlocked salmon fishing at East Grand Lake in Weston, Maine, three of us caught about 50 fish, all of which went back into the lake alive, except for one dinner, 3 fish 20 to 22 inches long, they were delicious. Egg batter, then breadcrumbs fried in Peanut Oil. Hot Peanut Oil dissolves any soft bones left in the fish after they are filleted. Then lemon juice on the fried fish. You want to die for. Anyway, I was away. I will send you my response to this terrible offense next week. . . .

It’s a matter of priorities and you are not one of them at this time. I tell my children all the time (twin daughters and a son) that they are surrounded by idiots. Also, a law school classmate, who was brilliant, use to say that you can teach them to read and teach them to write, but you can’t teach them to THINK.'”

Just when you thought you had a handle on AI coming for your job, now here come the teenagers.

This kid passed the California Bar at age 17 after completing both high school and the first two years of his JD program by the end of what would have normally been the 10th grade.

And both of his sisters are planning to follow the same path.https://buff.ly/3tgPJXO

For your "they're heeeeeeere" Thursday, Representative Tim Burchett (R-TN) calls for more government transparency regarding UFOs. We don't like his chances. https://buff.ly/4a9XL5u

File this under punishments that fit the crime:

A woman in Parma, Ohio, who threw her order at a Chipotle employee was sentenced to 6 months in jail, 3 months suspended. But the judge also told her she could avoid some of the jailtime by working in a fast food joint. Doesn't seem like it has to be a Chipotle. https://buff.ly/3uNSj8f

So if you're in the greater Cleveland area, please exercise caution in ordering your double quarter-pounders.

Why don't we know really anything about Q*, the potential artificial general intelligence algorithm OpenAI is developing - the incentives for secrecy in AI research, and the agenda-setting effects of big corporate leadership. As yourself if this is a good state of affairs when we're talking about existential threats - would you want private corporations holding exclusive control of nuclear weapons with very little public accountability? https://buff.ly/3GpNcxq

What do you do when you tell someone you're a lawyer and they proceed to make a bunch of lawyer jokes? Politely saying "[bleep] off" doesn't seem like the best way to win friends and influence people.

Miss Manners suggests saying "I hope you never need one," which seems like an okay option. https://buff.ly/3RmFWbT

Any other solid comebacks?

Surely you heard something about the bizarre firing and rehiring of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman over the last two weeks. But here's what you might have missed - it may all have started because somebody in the basement was cooking up a potential murder-bot.

Apparently just before OpenAI showed Altman the door, several of its "staff researchers wrote a letter to the board of directors warning of a powerful artificial intelligence discovery that they said could threaten humanity." Over 700 other OpenAI employees threatened to leave to join Altman at Microsoft, then OpenAI rehired him.

So what about the murder-bot? Well, it's named Q*, and according to "[s]ome at OpenAI . . . Q* (pronounced Q-Star) could be a breakthrough in the startup's search for what's known as artificial general intelligence (AGI), one of the people told Reuters. OpenAI defines AGI as autonomous systems that surpass humans in most economically valuable tasks.

Given vast computing resources, the new model was able to solve certain mathematical problems . . . [and] conquering the ability to do math — where there is only one right answer — implies AI would have greater reasoning capabilities resembling human intelligence." https://buff.ly/46nnaW9
