"Why did you leave your last job?" trips up more candidates than it should.

Keep it factual, forward-looking, and free of complaints about a former employer. One sentence on the situation, one sentence on what you are looking for now. That’s it.

Example:
Instead of: "I left because of my last manager."
Try: "I was ready for a role with more hands-on field time, and this position lines up with that."
