New jobless-claims data out today: 197,000 Americans filed for unemployment last week, up 9,000 from the week before.

Context matters here. That number is still low by historical standards, which means companies aren't doing mass layoffs. But hiring isn't picking up either. It's the same "low-hire, low-fire" market we've been in all summer: people aren't losing jobs, but they aren't landing them quickly either.

If you're searching, that's the real takeaway. The roles exist, but with so little turnover, the good ones are crowded and slow to open. Volume won't cut it. Getting matched to the right roles and actually getting seen is what moves the needle.

Openings are up. Hiring isn't.

This week's jobs data showed openings hitting a two-year high near 7.6 million, while new hires dropped for the third month in a row. Translation: employers are posting plenty of roles and being very picky about who they actually hire.

In a market like this, firing off 50 generic resumes gets you nowhere. Here is what does help:

Tailor the top of your resume to each posting. Use the exact skills and tools named in the job description. Lead your bullets with results, not duties. And apply to fewer roles that genuinely fit rather than blasting everything.

It is tedious, but it is what gets you past the filters and in front of a human. That is the grind we take off your plate, but the advice works no matter how you do it.
