Meet our August Behind the Badge honoree, resource RN Alexandria "Ali" Cislo.

One year ago, Ali made a decision many new graduate nurses might shy away from. She stepped into one of the most dynamic roles in the hospital, joining Loyola Medicine's Float Pool team as a newly licensed registered nurse.

Ali first joined Loyola Medicine in February 2021 as a patient care technician in the Float Pool while attending nursing school. She found encouragement and flexibility from her leadership team, allowing her to balance work and classes.

Ali took advantage of opportunities designed to help future nurses succeed, including Loyola Medicine's Nurse Extern Program, which provided valuable hands-on experience before stepping into her RN role. After graduation, she continued her professional development through Loyola Medicine's Nurse Residency Program, helping build her confidence and skills as a new nurse.

Although starting as a new graduate Float Pool nurse felt intimidating at times, Ali knew she wasn't stepping into the role alone. She credits much of her success to the support she received from her preceptor, Davonte, during her transition from student to nurse.

"I had a great preceptor who helped ease my transition from being a new grad to being on my own," Ali shared. "Even now, over a year later, he still checks in with me and asks how I'm doing or if there's anything I need help with." That experience reinforced one of the most important lessons she has learned throughout her career.

"Nursing can never be tackled solo. We need support not only from our colleagues, but from our families as well." For Ali, family is at the center of her story. In fact, it was her parents who first encouraged her to pursue nursing during her senior year of high school. They saw something in their daughter that she couldn't yet see in herself.

Outside of work, Ali enjoys spending time with family and friends and draws strength from her faith, which has been a guiding force throughout her life. And for a fun fact? Ali is proudly 100% Polish and spent years participating in Polish folk dancing, which helped her stay connected to her heritage and culture.
From PCT to nurse extern, to nurse resident, and now RN, Loyola Medicine has been part of every step of Ali’s journey.

“When I walk into a room, I put myself in my patients’ shoes,” he said. “I think about my parents being in that bed. I treat them the way I would want someone to treat my family.”

Refugio Avitia, a float pool nurse at MacNeal Hospital, was introduced to healthcare at a young age, often acting as a translator for his Spanish-speaking parents at their medical appointments. In 2014, he joined MacNeal as a patient sitter and gained a different perspective, watching the nurses and physicians interact and care for the patients they served. It's how he found his calling and shifted his career path to nursing.

Refugio graduated as a nurse in 2020. He quickly put that passion and education to work when needed most. His care, dedication and commitment continue today as he works in the float pool, able to flex his skills across the hospital. He also takes advantage of Loyola's tuition assistance program and partnership with Capella University to get his BSN.

Looking ahead, Refugio hopes to teach and mentor others. “Nursing has so many paths,” he said. “If you feel that calling, let it drive you.” For Refugio Avitia, nursing is a way to give back, honor where he came from and ensure every patient feels seen, respected and cared for, just like family.
