Diary of a Doula

Diary of a Doula I’m a birth doula and doula mentor located in central Connecticut. Come hang out with me here whil

My name is Melissa Duenas and I am a birth and postpartum Doula. I support parents through pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum and beyond. I love this work and feel honored to be part of such an amazing journey for so many. I specialize in dealing with those who have perinatal mood disorders, anxiety, or have PTSD (this include spouses). I also work with many military families or those with schedules that may require specialty care.

I think the arrive trial is sorta crap 🤣 BUT the question is what do you want and what outcome will you get based on your body’s info

Nesting isn’t one size fits all. It’s also not a sign that labor is around the corner.

Let’s talk about gestational diabetes and VBAC

✨ 2026 IS OFFICIALLY FULL! ✨

I am so incredibly grateful to everyone who continues to trust me, recommend me, tag me and send families my way. So much of my practice has been built through word of mouth and referrals and I never take that for granted.

With that said, I am officially FULL for the remainder of 2026 and booking into 2027!

📅 Current 2027 availability:
• January — 1 spot
• February — 1 spot
• March — 2 spots
• April — 3 spots
• May — 4 spots
• June & beyond — 5 spots per month

HUSKY families: I have 1 HUSKY spot available per month for families located within approximately 30 minutes of Hartford.

Free consultations are still available and can be scheduled at:

One small but important update: there is now a $25 fee for missed consultations/no-shows. As my TikTok following has grown, I’ve also seen a pretty significant increase in people scheduling free consultations and then not showing up. 🙃

Consultations are still completely FREE — the fee only applies if you reserve a time on my calendar and don’t show up. My availability is limited and every unused appointment is a time that could have gone to another family hoping to connect.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for keeping me busy, supporting my work, sharing my name in mom groups, sending your friends and family my way and allowing me to keep doing work that I genuinely love. ❤️

Here’s to an amazing 2027 birth year! ✨

Who is resharing this mess!!?!??

Some people won’t love this, but I think it a great way for folks who don’t know where to start, to start!

So science can’t give us a perfect sibling age gap. But if we’re balancing pregnancy recovery + child development + practical parenting demands, roughly 2.5–4 years between births is a pretty reasonable “sweet spot.”

And, of course, the best spacing for an individual family may look completely different.

Positive pregnancy test? Here are your first steps:

1. Figure out the first day of your last period
2. Start taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid
3. Review medications and supplements with your provider or pharmacist, don’t stop prescriptions on your own
4. Schedule your first prenatal appointment
5. Stop alcohol, smoking and recreational drugs
6. Learn the basic pregnancy food and safety recommendations
7. Know which symptoms warrant a call to your provider or urgent evaluation

Take a breath! You don’t have to figure out your entire pregnancy today.

Save this for later or send it to someone who just saw two lines.

Could an oxytocin boost before pumping help milk flow and improve pumping output? Potentially. 👀

Important distinction: better milk removal ≠ instantly making more milk. Oxytocin helps release milk, while ongoing milk production is largely driven by frequent and effective milk removal.
