"I didn't feel I was growing. I felt I was stuck." 💼

Mayra Garcia spent 13 years in phone sales, then went on to manage a Wendy's. She had plenty of experience but felt like she wasn't moving forward. She wanted a career, financial stability, and the chance to be a role model for her children.

She didn't stop at one — Brianna Wilburn earned it TWICE! 👏

Brianna Wilburn had a master's degree in economics, worked hard, and still found herself cycling through retail job after retail job in Lancaster with no clear path forward.

Then she found JVS SoCal. 💙

First, she completed our FREE MediWork$ program — launching her career in the medical field. And she didn't stop there. A year later, she came back and graduated from our ImagingWorks program, taking her career to the next level in medical imaging! 🩺🩻

We are proud to honor Miss Val with the Impact Award at our Woman to Woman Conference on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Held from 11am - 2pm at the Skirball Cultural Center , this year's theme is Opening Doors, Changing Women's Lives. Please join us: https://jvs-socal.org/w2w

The Impact Award recognizes those who have made significant and lasting contributions to our local community. Valorie is one of three featured honorees at this year's event, which raises awareness and critical funding for JVS SoCal’s programs.

Valorie is the former head coach of the UCLA Gymnastics Team, a position she held for 29 years. Her accolades include: 4X NCAA Coach of the Year, 18 PAC12 Championships, and more. “Miss Val,” as she is affectionately known, proved that one can achieve success at the highest level while honoring her student-athletes as people first.

When Cole, Ella, and Livia Ivie each headed off to college, their family faced a steep financial climb — self-employed parents, three kids in school within a few years of each other, a pandemic that cut into their income, and a serious health scare for Ella along the way.

Six years later, all three siblings have walked their own path to success:

🎓 Cole earned his master's in wildlife conservation from Cal Poly SLO and is aiming for a PhD
🎓 Ella graduated from LSU in fashion design and now works as a freelance fashion production assistant
🎓 Livia is a student-athlete at Vassar, majoring in psychology

None of it would have been possible without the JVS SoCal Scholarship Program.

"We can't say enough about the support we've had from JVS," says Marc and Kelli Ivie, the siblings' parents.
