Congratulations to the first Resident of the Month in 2021, Dr. Peter Yarger (Anesthesiology, PGY - 3)!
Dr. Yarger, among other things, was nominated this month for his ability to manage complex care, professionalism, and exceptional patient care. He has been praised for his abundance of medical knowledge and always going above and beyond.

One of the many stand-out comments regarding Dr. Yarger mentioned that he helped with a multitude of patients in the PACU including a teenage girl experiencing post-surgical complications. Upon being paged he arrived at the bedside quickly and remained calm and professional throughout the process while coordinating the care of the patient so that all teams were on the same page about the treatment plan. In another instance he immediately identified that one medicine wasn't working for a patient and was quick to go to a different class of medicines and try a different approach. He remained professional while caring for the patient and mother who had poor prior medical experiences in emergency rooms. The patient had very positive outcomes and was eventually able to be discharge home because of the approach that he took.

Dr. Yarger also makes sure he provides the tools necessary to care for patients efficiently before leaving the bedside. He further regularly re-evaluates and confirms progress and treatments to make sure efficient and high-quality care is being provided. He takes his time and is sure to be very thorough. He goes above and beyond in post-care documentation and planning to set the best course for all of his patients.

Congratulations again to you, Dr. Yarger on your continued determination and performance – you have more than earned the title of Resident of the Month for January! What a great representation of what it means to be an exemplary resident here at UK!

Congratulations to the last resident of the month for 2020! Dr. Emma Scott (Med/Peds, PGY - 4)

Dr. Scott, among other recommendations, was selected as Resident of the Month for her leadership skills and ability to drive systemic change to improve patient outcomes.

One of the comments that really stood out mentioned that Dr. Scott is an excellent leader by example. She rotated on a direct care team, a rotation not usually pursued by residents as its generally a lot of work. Throughout the rotation, several were quarantined due to COVID exposures and she was pulled to a teaching team with limited team members and with very complex patients. Not only did she do it with a smile, she did it so very well. The comment further stated that Dr. Scott never gives less than 100% for her patients. It further admired her unwillingness to accept anything but the best for her patients not by outwardly complaining to others but by putting into motion systemic change. Upon patient evaluation she was concerned about the possibility of status epilepticus and ordered tests to identify the possibility of status. An extended period of time elapsed between order and fulfillment and Emma quickly identified that there were several holes in the current system for initiation of this test. She appropriately filed an incident report and continued to follow-up on the incident report until the wheels of systemic change began to turn. She exemplifies the engaged clinician by constantly seeking to improve how we deliver care.

Congratulations again to you, Dr. Scott on your continued determination and performance – you have more than earned the title of Resident of the Month for December 2020! What a great representation of what it means to be an exemplary resident here at UK!

Congratulations to March Resident of the Month, Dr. Zachary Kilnger!

Dr. Klinger, among other things, was nominated this month for his leadership and knowledge. He has been praised for his bedside manners and alleviating pain issues and assisting with critical post op patients. He was further commended for being an invaluable asset to the PACU team this month. His nominations noted that Dr. Klinger was beyond helpful as a member of the team and was always easy to approach. Furthermore, Dr. Klinger went beyond the role of a physician and was willing to jump in wherever the team needed him! Wow!

"Dr. Klinger is an invaluable asset to the patients and nursing staff in PACU. He does not limit his participation in patient care to the role of physician. Instead, he is a true team-mate, taking on whatever role is necessary to facilitate the safest and most efficient care of the patient. Dr. Klinger is an exemplary example of the values we have at UK, especially patient-centeredness. His dedication to the needs of the patients and nurses is worthy of applause. Dr. Klinger is well-rounded, eager to assist, and passionate about taking care of every patient, every time."

Congratulations again to you, Dr. Klinger on your continued determination and performance – you have more than earned the title of Resident of the Month for March! What a great representation of what it means to be an exemplary resident here at UK! We are so fortunate to have residents like you as a part of our team!

Here are some additional comments that attest to his character:

• Dr. Klinger has been a valuable asset to our unit this month. He carries himself in a way that makes him very approachable. I feel comfortable calling on him for help or advice with clinical situations I'm not comfortable with. He is thoughtful/knowledgeable in his evaluation and management of problems while still being very caring towards the patient and their family. One particular situation stands out to me; I was caring for a patient who was showing signs of deterioration and he was willing to jump in and assist confirming my suspicions of what was happening while we waited for the patient's main team to arrive bedside. His role as PACU resident did not require he help in that situation, but I knew he would be happy to help and I knew his calm demeanor would be helpful for me and even more so for the family member that was becoming very worried. He communicates directly and considerately with nurses which we appreciate a lot. Dr. Klinger definitely deserves this honor.

Congratulations to February Resident of the Month, Dr. Charles Kieffer!

Dr. Kieffer was nominated for his incredible leadership skills, work ethic, competency, positive attitude and more. His peers commend him for always providing exceptional care in the emergency department and further inspiring them with his work ethic. Dr. Kieffer often turns difficult situations and into manageable challenges and makes sure no details are overlooked. He was further nominated for his patient interactions. Dr. Kieffer is an extremely well-rounded resident that is always thoughtful, caring, and kind and always goes above and beyond for his patients. During this past Holiday season, when volume was exceptionally high, Dr. Kieffer worked nights and brought energy and positive attitude to the team and helped the ER to run like a well-oiled machine.

Congratulations again to you, Dr. Kieffer on your continued determination and performance – you have more than earned the title of Resident of the Month for February! What a great representation of what it means to be an exemplary resident here at UK! We are so fortunate to have residents like you as a part of our team!

• Dr. Keiffer is a leader in the emergency department and provides exceptional care everyday. I was particularly impressed by how he led the ER team through a series of recent difficult cases. He skillfully assigned residents to different critical patients and made sure that no details were overlooked. His work ethic is contagious and he turns difficult situations into manageable challenges. Charlie is thoughtful and kind in every interaction.

• I don’t think there are enough adjectives to describe Charlie. Charlie is a well rounded resident. In my three years of working with him I can honestly say that I’ve never met anyone as genuine as him. Charlie is such a competent and caring doctor! He goes above and beyond for his patients. We are very lucky to have him as part of our team.

Congratulations to January Resident of the Month, Dr. Lindsey Hastings!

Dr. Hastings has been recognized for going above and beyond to help her team. She received countless comments on how readily available she is during night shift. "We were overwhelmed due to an unexpected departure of 2 of our CST assistants, leaving us quite short-staffed. Lindsey stepped up and was willing to call back patients and room them herself to help facilitate patient care. She knows that is not an expectation we ever make of residents to do, but she was willing to go above and beyond." Lindsey's colleagues believe her enthusiasm to serve is what keeps the team in good spirit on a busy night.

Congratulations again to you, Dr. Hastings on your continued determination and performance – you have more than earned the title of Resident of the Month for January!

Here are some additional comments that attest to her character:

"Lindsey is always willing to make time for members of her team. She stays up with interns and when nights are easy for her, she'll take the time to help our team out with admissions. She also makes treats to help with team spirit."

"Lindsey Hastings is an incredible physician. She is always approachable and goes above and beyond to help in any way that she can. She is a great leader who guides her team and incorporates teaching throughout the day. She is always quick to respond to any question or concern from nurses, interns, and med students. She is fantastic!"

"Lindsey was on float last month and went above and beyond to help at night when other services got behind with admits. She went the extra mile to follow up a bilirubin on newborn when we had a difficult time tracking the daytime provider"

Congratulations to December Resident of the Month, Dr. Priya Srivastava! This is the second month in a row that the RoM winner has come from our Med/Peds program!

Dr. Srivastava was nominated for her helpfulness and positive energy as well as her continued support of other co-residents. Priya is an excellent team player. She is always willing to give extra time for patients' well being and patient care. She is always involved in further patient care and in the submitted nomination it was noted that Dr Srivastava was integral in a patient's care to allow them to be clean from drugs of abuse. She is a wonderfully non-judgmental, compassionate physician for her patients and co-resident.

"Priya is a paragon of care coordination and patient centered care. She will not stop fighting against systemic frustrations to get tests or consultations that her patients need. Anyone would be lucky to have her as their doctor."

We're a little behind schedule with sharing the Resident's of the Month but wanted to give a big congratulations to November Resident of the Month, Dr. Dorothy McCord from UK's Med/Peds program! This is a post to check out!

We were extremely impressed by the comments submitted to the committee on behalf of Dr. McCord. She has been recognized as an exemplary resident to her peers and extremely knowledgeable. What really stood out were the comments regarding her fierce patient advocacy. DD is known for going above and beyond for her patients to make sure they get the best care possible, regardless of the grief she may catch. Her colleagues say "She isn’t here for me, she isn’t here for you, she isn’t here for the hospital or her program- she’s here for the patient. Full. Stop." DD has often stayed much longer than the end of her shift to assist in patient procedures and help her co-residents. Dr. McCord has further been praised for her leadership, in-depth knowledge, professionalism, team-work abilities and much more. Her ambition and dedication is inspiring. UK could not be more proud to have such high achieving residents as Dr. McCord. Thank you for all that you do for our patients and fellow residents! What a magnificent representation of what it means to be an outstanding physician here at the University of Kentucky. Congratulations again to you, Dr. McCord on your continued determination and performance – you have more than earned the title of Resident of the Month for November!

Here are some comments that really stood out:
"DD is a passionate educator and one of our most effective teachers. She goes above and beyond for her patients as well. She embraces the socially vulnerable and has been outspoken regarding addressing social determinants of health as well as gender bias and equality for both patients and physician. Her example and grit should be lauded."

"I worked with DD while she was on the pediatric nephrology elective. I was pregnant with twins at the time and was required to go to OB appts weekly. She maintained the team while I was away and basically acted as the attending. Furthermore, when my twins were delivered, DD personally cared for them. I called her frantically two days after they were discharged from a local hospital and she was in the ER waiting for us with the pediatric hospitalist attending. She demonstrated not only leadership but professionalism, compassion and excellent teamwork with the ER team. She is amazing!"

"I am so, so grateful to have Dr. McCord in our program. I have been able to serve by her side throughout our four years of residency and am always impressed by the passion she brings to work every day and her desire to make positive changes. One such example of this is on our Pediatric side, where morale sometimes runs low and there used to be minimal options for wellness and resident togetherness. On her own (with her own money, time, and home), she started Meaning in Medicine events where she provided a time for resident rapport and support, along with some amazing home cooked Creole food. These events where so needed for our residents and I am so thankful for her to starting this, which has now grown and we have been able to incorporate more wellness events into the Pediatric Program.
On top of this, she is the person that is always there for residents. Any time of the day, night - whether it is help with thinking through a patient or calming someone when they are struggling with the delicate balances of residency life. Everyone jokingly causes her "mom" in the family, but it is so true. She is the center of our Med Peds family, always there to guide, lead, and support us. "
