We're a little behind schedule with sharing the Resident's of the Month but wanted to give a big congratulations to November Resident of the Month, Dr. Dorothy McCord from UK's Med/Peds program! This is a post to check out!
We were extremely impressed by the comments submitted to the committee on behalf of Dr. McCord. She has been recognized as an exemplary resident to her peers and extremely knowledgeable. What really stood out were the comments regarding her fierce patient advocacy. DD is known for going above and beyond for her patients to make sure they get the best care possible, regardless of the grief she may catch. Her colleagues say "She isn’t here for me, she isn’t here for you, she isn’t here for the hospital or her program- she’s here for the patient. Full. Stop." DD has often stayed much longer than the end of her shift to assist in patient procedures and help her co-residents. Dr. McCord has further been praised for her leadership, in-depth knowledge, professionalism, team-work abilities and much more. Her ambition and dedication is inspiring. UK could not be more proud to have such high achieving residents as Dr. McCord. Thank you for all that you do for our patients and fellow residents! What a magnificent representation of what it means to be an outstanding physician here at the University of Kentucky. Congratulations again to you, Dr. McCord on your continued determination and performance – you have more than earned the title of Resident of the Month for November!
Here are some comments that really stood out:
"DD is a passionate educator and one of our most effective teachers. She goes above and beyond for her patients as well. She embraces the socially vulnerable and has been outspoken regarding addressing social determinants of health as well as gender bias and equality for both patients and physician. Her example and grit should be lauded."
"I worked with DD while she was on the pediatric nephrology elective. I was pregnant with twins at the time and was required to go to OB appts weekly. She maintained the team while I was away and basically acted as the attending. Furthermore, when my twins were delivered, DD personally cared for them. I called her frantically two days after they were discharged from a local hospital and she was in the ER waiting for us with the pediatric hospitalist attending. She demonstrated not only leadership but professionalism, compassion and excellent teamwork with the ER team. She is amazing!"
"I am so, so grateful to have Dr. McCord in our program. I have been able to serve by her side throughout our four years of residency and am always impressed by the passion she brings to work every day and her desire to make positive changes. One such example of this is on our Pediatric side, where morale sometimes runs low and there used to be minimal options for wellness and resident togetherness. On her own (with her own money, time, and home), she started Meaning in Medicine events where she provided a time for resident rapport and support, along with some amazing home cooked Creole food. These events where so needed for our residents and I am so thankful for her to starting this, which has now grown and we have been able to incorporate more wellness events into the Pediatric Program.
On top of this, she is the person that is always there for residents. Any time of the day, night - whether it is help with thinking through a patient or calming someone when they are struggling with the delicate balances of residency life. Everyone jokingly causes her "mom" in the family, but it is so true. She is the center of our Med Peds family, always there to guide, lead, and support us. "
