Do you have a plan if a natural disaster hits your business? We never think it will happen to us. But what if it does?
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), up to 40% of businesses never reopen after a disaster strikes.
With the volatile spring upon us, prepare now for any possible natural disasters. Here are our tips to make sure your company operations encounter minimal disruption.
1. Ensure your employees receive the appropriate training, including first aid, how to operate fire extinguishers, and how to deal with dangerous spills or leaks. Offer annual training so they know the latest procedures and compliance.
2. Create a business continuity plan. What are the steps you can take to maintain the critical functions of your business? Do you have a backup facility where some level of operations can take place? Do you have vital data and records protected, either on remote servers or in physical form, at a secured facility?
3. Make sure you have developed a communications plan to update your stakeholders, including the media.
4. Maintain the appropriate insurance for your business and review it every year - especially if your business is growing.
5. Keep an updated list of resources you can contact if disaster strikes. This would include FEMA, local emergency management services, your insurance company representative, the American Red Cross, etc.
