I want to talk about something that is happening in workplaces right now that does not get nearly enough attention in small business circles.
Overemployment.
It is exactly what it sounds like.
Remote employees secretly working two, three, sometimes five full-time jobs at the same time. Collecting multiple full-time salaries from employers who have no idea.
And it is not rare anymore.
The practice exploded after remote work became the norm.
Digital tools make it easy to look busy across multiple platforms simultaneously.
And small businesses without large HR teams are the most vulnerable because nobody is closely monitoring patterns or output against expectations.
The wake-up moment for a lot of companies came when a software engineer was publicly exposed for working at several Silicon Valley startups at once and the response online was not shock.
It was thousands of people saying they were doing the same thing.
This is not me saying distrust your team.
It is me saying know what is happening in your workforce.
Thorough vetting before someone joins your team is your best protection.

Has anyone else been hearing about this term job hugging?
It is exactly what it sounds like. Workers clinging to jobs they are unhappy in because the outside world feels too uncertain to risk a move.
And right now more than half of the American workforce fits that description.
I am not here to tell anyone to be reckless. The market is genuinely uncertain and I understand the fear behind staying put.
But I do want to say this.
If you are in a role that is not growing you, not fulfilling you, and not paying you what you are worth, staying there indefinitely is also a risk. It is just a slower and quieter one.
The best time to explore your options is before you are desperate to leave. While you still have leverage. While you can be selective.
