🚩 RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR WHEN HIRING A CLEANER 🚩

As a professional cleaner, here are a few things I would personally watch for when hiring someone to clean your home:

🚩 Using the same cloths/tools in the bathroom and kitchen without preventing cross-contamination.

🚩 Not asking questions about surfaces before using chemicals. Natural stone, hardwood, painted cabinets, matte walls, etc. all require different care.

🚩 Mixing chemicals or using unsafe chemical combinations.

🚩 Promising an entire deep clean in an unrealistically short amount of time. A TRUE deep clean takes time.

🚩 Not clearly explaining what is included in the price before starting.

🚩 Consistently skipping the little details that are supposed to be included.

🚩 Damaging something and trying to hide it. Accidents happen! Honesty is what matters.

🚩 Constantly showing up late, canceling, or not showing up without communicating.

🚩 Bringing another person into your home without asking first.

🚩 Gossiping about other clients or sharing private information about their homes. If they don’t respect another client’s privacy, will they respect yours?

🚩 Judging or shaming you for the condition of your home. A cleaner is there to HELP you not embarrass you.

🚩 Ignoring your boundaries regarding pets, fragile belongings, rooms you don’t want entered, or products you don’t want used.

And remember making a mistake isn’t automatically a red flag. We’re human. I’ve made mistakes in my years of cleaning too.

A little reminder for my fellow cleaners, especially those who are constantly booked back to back. 🤍

I recently spoke with a potential client who is looking for a new cleaner because her current cleaner has simply taken on more than she can realistically keep up with. By the time she gets to this client’s home, she’s already exhausted, and things that normally wouldn’t be missed are starting to get overlooked.

And honestly, I get it. When you’re self employed, it’s tempting to say yes to every booking. More clients means more income, and it can feel impossible to turn work away when you’re trying to build your business.

But your capacity matters.

Your clients notice the little things. They notice when corners start getting missed, when the attention to detail isn’t quite there, or when the service they were used to receiving starts changing.

You don’t have to fill every available day to be successful.

Leave yourself breathing room. Give yourself enough time between homes. Take a day off when you need one. And most importantly, know when your schedule has reached its limit.

Taking care of your clients starts with taking care of yourself. ❤️

There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying, “I’m booked,” instead of stretching yourself so thin that everyone loses in the end.
