One of the partners CSF supports through its “respite care” category is Wildwood Outdoor Education Center, whose mission is to “offer all children the chance to experience the wonders of living and learning in the outdoors.”
CSF provides support for Respite and Recreation Weekends, which offer social-emotional learning opportunities for youth impacted by foster care, kinship placement, or at risk of entering foster care. These experiences also provide an important break for parents and caregivers, giving them time to recharge and helping strengthen and preserve the family unit.

At Wildwood, a child in a canoe is learning more than how to paddle. She is learning how to stay calm when things wobble, communicate with her partner, and trust that she can get where she is going. She is building confidence, resilience, and the skills to navigate challenges—learning and growing along the way.
Wildwood serves the whole family. While children learn, explore, and grow at camp, their caregivers receive much-needed time away from their responsibilities and an opportunity to rest and recharge. Through a network of community partners, Wildwood connects with families across Jackson County, helping ensure that children and caregivers alike have opportunities to thrive.

On World Mental Health Day, we recognize that supporting mental health is essential to helping children, families, and communities thrive.

At the Children’s Services Fund of Jackson County, we invest in organizations that help children and youth build resilience, navigate challenges, strengthen relationships, and access the mental health services and supports they need.

We also recognize that supporting children’s mental health means supporting the people and systems around them—from parents and caregivers to educators, behavioral health professionals, and community partners. Mental health is not just about responding when challenges arise. It is about creating opportunities for connection, belonging, and well-being every day.

Today, we celebrate the partners working across Jackson County to make those opportunities possible and reaffirm our commitment to investing in the mental health and well-being of our community’s children.

One of CSF’s ten core service areas is respite care.

WHAT IS RESPITE CARE?
Respite care provides temporary care for children while supporting caregivers in the ongoing responsibilities of caregiving.
Respite can be provided proactively or during periods of crisis, stress, or prolonged caregiver burden.
Respite can look like:
• A few hours of temporary care
• Day or weekend programs
• Recreational or enrichment activities
• Overnight or outdoor camp experiences

WHY DOES RESPITE MATTER?
Respite is a valuable resource that supports caregivers and children alike. By providing temporary care and additional support when families need it, respite can help reduce caregiver stress, strengthen family stability, and ultimately help preserve the family unit.

Please join us in welcoming our new Program Officer to the CSF team!

We are excited to welcome Meghan Cizek to the Children’s Services Fund of Jackson County.

Meghan brings a strong background in grantmaking, systems change, and community partnership, along with a deep commitment to improving outcomes for children and families. For the past seven years, she has worked with the University of Kansas Center for Public Partnerships and Research, helping strengthen child and family well-being systems, build partner capacity, and turn big-picture ideas into practical strategies.

Her experience also includes managing the full grantmaking lifecycle for federal funding—from application review and budget support to reporting and technical assistance—as well as earlier work providing services that supported the mental health and well-being of Jackson County families.

Throughout her career, Meghan has centered authentic community partnership, bringing together community members, service providers, and system leaders to learn from one another and work toward shared goals.
We’re excited about the experience and perspective she brings to CSF and for the relationships she will build with our partners as we continue working together to strengthen the mental health and well-being of Jackson County’s children, youth, and families.

One of the projects the CSF supports under the "Community" funding category is the Collective Action for Children.

Originally established in 2001 as the City Child Abuse Roundtable, this group has grown to become a coalition of child-serving organizations along with local and elected officials in the Kansas City area dedicated to protecting children and promoting their safety and well-being.

By building connection amongst partnering agencies, legislators, and law enforcement, a pipeline of support has been created that removes confusion around child advocacy resources. The Collective works to improve prevention of child abuse, provide education to decision makers, improve child-family interactions & relationships, promote agency collaboration, and influence public funding.

CSF is proud to partner with The Collective as both a funder and a member.

A full room and unmistakable energy marked the beginning of something new for Jackson County’s behavioral health workforce.

CSF recently brought together the first-ever cohort of supervisors and supervisees participating in our two-year Supervision Learning Pilot. During the kickoff convening, participants connected across organizations, reflected on their experiences, explored what effective supervision looks like, and identified priorities for future cohort learning.

Their conversations highlighted the importance of trust, vulnerability, meaningful feedback, professional growth, and support for both supervisors and supervisees.

We are grateful to the clinicians and organizations helping shape this learning community and strengthen Jackson County’s behavioral health workforce.

Community needs and promising solutions do not always fit neatly within a traditional funding category. Community Funding gives CSF the flexibility to respond to emerging needs, invest in innovative approaches, and support collaborative efforts that strengthen the systems serving Jackson County’s children and families.

Through Community Funding, CSF can help make possible:

• More culturally and linguistically responsive behavioral health services
• Professional learning that strengthens how organizations support children and families
• Collaboration among child-serving organizations, community leaders, and public officials
• Coordinated efforts to prevent child abuse and promote children’s safety and well-being

Community Funding allows CSF to listen, learn, and respond—creating opportunities to address complex challenges and help promising ideas take shape.
