elevated fire risk across portions of southeastern Kansas and
southwestern Missouri today.

Watch where and how you're driving:
• Vehicle exhaust from parked cars can start fires. Don’t park in dry vegetation.
• Ensure trailer chains are secure and not dragging on the roadway
• Park it if you have a flat; sparks from the wheel are a good fire starter
• Drive a hoopty? Make sure your bumpers aren’t dragging

• Campfires
• Fireworks
Put your butt where it belongs
• Discard ci******es or smoking materials in the trash after being put out. Should do this regardless of fire danger.

A wildfire, grass fire, forest fire, or brushfire is an unplanned and uncontrolled fire in an area of combustible vegetation. Wildfires can start accidentally from a variety of human activities and even some natural events, especially when vegetation is as dry as it is now.

Know Before You Light It

Did you know that, regardless of whether there is a burn ban or not, you are responsible for any injury or damage outside your property if a fire you start goes beyond your property?

Missouri State Statutes provide the following regarding burning:
569.060. Reckless burning or exploding — penalty. — 1. A person commits the offense of reckless burning or exploding if he or she recklessly starts a fire or causes an explosion and thereby damages or destroys the property of another.
(1) The offense of reckless burning or exploding is a class B misdemeanor.

569.065. Negligent burning or exploding — penalty. — 1. A person commits the offense of negligent burning or exploding if he or she, with criminal negligence, causes damage to property or to the woodlands, cropland, grassland, prairie, or marsh of another by:
(1) Starting a fire or causing an explosion; or
(2) Allowing a fire burning on lands in his or her possession or control onto the property of another.
(3) The offense of negligent burning or exploding is a class C misdemeanor.

Given the current weather conditions, lighting a fire may be considered reckless or negligent.
